Dungeness River Fish Population

A letter in today's PDN reads:

"Isn't it amazing that the Department of Ecology wants us to use less water so there will be more water in the Dungeness River for the fish the Department of Fish and Wildlife will not let us catch?  And we pay these people good money."

Damn right!  But the letter writer doesn't go far enough.  What's the deal with all these "endangered" species anyway?  Tigers, elephants, wolves — they serve no purpose whatsoever.  If you can't eat 'em, what good are they?

I think there's a lot of critters on this rock we could do without, all things are connected my butt.

As for the fishing, I have mixed feelings about all that, I wouldn't want to see all the fish disappear but do think fishing should open up some. Because of the damn rules and regs I didn't buy a license last year.

And catch and release is stupid, those waters must have tons of fish in them. This fishing crap is just good bucks for those in the scam.

Protect Wild fish, enough said.

Ban Tribal Netting (More Limitations)

Greatly Limit Commercial Fishing

Get the idiot fisherman off the rivers and salt water.

Yea, all those Fish and Wildlife workers....clueless. How anyone can devote their lives to the protection of our natural resources, under the framework of a democratic republic, it's beyond me. I hope all these federal workers around here in the forests become really unpopular.

Reading these comments reminded me of a movie I saw with David Suzuki the other night on one of those Canadian channels. There was one part that really was pretty good. I looked for it on YouTube to send to a couple friends.

It is on "Growth". You know, kinda like what we all want and expect. Check this out. It is only about 3 minutes long.

Tom, remember that this is a logging town. Nobody cares about any dumb stuff like the unknown ways the world all fits together and works. What a bunch of garbage!

As Billy says,"I think there's a lot of critters on this rock we could do without, all things are connected my butt."

Just hand me another beer, and change the channel while you're up.

Wild...Be kinda neat if you knew what you were talking about.Your "solution" seems to be DO NOT EAT FISH. Unless it's ok to eat fish out of somebody else's water.

Habitat Destruction, (including damns and hatcheries) are the reason for declining runs.

Anonnymouse seems to believe that Fish and Wildlife is the answer...yeah right, the folks who have been killing native runs for a hundred years with inferior hatchery fish...gonna fill the Elwha with these things before the natives have a chance to reestablish themselves.

This is just a bit more complicated issue than your glib off the shelf responses can address. Maybe before you start typing, you might read a book like "Mountain in the Clouds, A Search for the Wild Salmon" by Bruce Brown. Unlike you, it's is pretty much the authority on this particular subject.

Thanks for offering "solutions" to this thorny, complicated problem, WTF? !

At least you refrained from dropping "D-bombs" this time. The meds are working, right? Right?

Clearly mans destruction of the wild salmon's habitat has had a drastic impact.
Irresponsible logging and hydroelectric power being two perfect examples.
Slowly we are undoing those wrongs by managing our forests and removing dams.

But as anon 6:30am says, the fish pens are causing more damage to an already heavily damaged wild salmon population.

We must continue all recovery initiatives and increase the effort to ban the raising of salmon in pens. Disease and sea lice are killing faster than ever.

@WTF

Don't eat the fish is my solution? Nowhere, did it say that.

Did you know that the Elwha tribal netting accounts for over 3/4 of the "caught" fish on that river.

Did you know that ONE commercial fishing boat in Alaska, wastes more halibut meat than the entire guided fishing fleet in SE Alaska is even allowed to catch (in one year).

Do you know how many idiots go to the Hoh, Queets and Quillayute every year and kill fish that are not supposed to be killed?

Do you know many IDIOT fisherman fish our very own PA summer king fishery and mistake a Humpy for King and end up keeping 8 fish that they thought were Kings?

So don't jump to conclusion and assume you know everything.

I do agree that Damns are a big problem for fish runs. But last I checked, none of the Forks systems have dams and rivers like the Cowlitz and Columbia produce more fish than all of our rivers combined.

Uh, That number used to be 100%. Read up on the pre Colombian fishery, bub. The natives have been hitting those runs hard for a thousand years. No problemo till whitey showed up.Funny how quick liberals sell out treaty rights as soon as those rights threaten their environmental misconceptions.

Did you know that ONE commercial fishing boat in Alaska, wastes more halibut meat than the entire guided fishing fleet in SE Alaska is even allowed to catch (in one year).

So charter boats are ok? This doesn't really square with your earlier statement about getting idiot fishermen off the salt water. We need better regulation and enforcement of our commercial fleets... We don't need to shut down an industry.

The Cowlitz produces far fewer fish now than it did even 15 years ago...As for the Columbia, look at the size of that river in comparison to any of the others, genius. I'll give ya three guesses why there's more fish in it.

We've reached a crisis point with Native fish and soon we'll have to make some decisions about which native runs we can protect and save and which runs we'll lose. It's for damn sure hatcheries cannot be allowed on "wild" rivers and fish pens need to be banned on the west coast, as well as moratoriums on the rivers in question as stocks rebuild. I believe we can save commercial and sport stocks in rivers designated for hatcheries as we rebuild native stocks in wild rivers. Now all we need do is figure a way to make this an Immigration or Homeland Security issue so we can get funding.

Well, yeah. But this is WTF? we're dealing with, not just some Anonymouse joker who thinks he knows something, anything, about something.

(Because we all know, at WTF?'s insistence, that "Anonymous" is just one person, probably Edna. Or Larry. Or Karen. Well, one of them, certainly ... anyway, WTF? says "Anonymous" is just one person so, by God, it must be so!)

But just you watch out. WTF? will vent invective on you, take off the gloves and, if all else fails, drop the "D-Bomb" on you. I'm glad I'm not you!

No, I don't know, but who says they are not suppose to be food?

The problem is over population, not that many of us like some fish, or something to frigging eat.

Ever notice that you need to eat something to stay alive? Keep an eye on your dog, I'll eat it if that is what it takes to keep me alive.

I am really questioning your ability to interpret information...

Did you know that ONE commercial fishing boat in Alaska, wastes more halibut meat than the entire guided fishing fleet in SE Alaska is even allowed to catch (in one year).

"So charter boats are ok? This doesn't really square with your earlier statement about getting idiot fishermen off the salt water. We need better regulation and enforcement of our commercial fleets... We don't need to shut down an industry."

Yes Charter boats are OK, and again. You are just agreeing with me. Nowhere did I say shut down an industry, all I am saying, is one commercial fishing vessel, throws more halibut meat over board, than all of the guided fishing fleet in Alaska is allowed to even keep.

It is even worse in an area like Port Angeles. The only thing that ever happens is the department of game takes everything out on the Sport Fisherman.

"This doesn't really square with your earlier statement about getting idiot fishermen off the salt water"

Again, you do not interpret my writings correctly. Idiot fisherman in PA mistake Pink Salmon for King salmon... Guides in Alaska / Washington / Oregon, do not make that mistake...

Fishing has been closed early in 2008 and in 2009 because people would mistake blackmouth for silvers and humpies... Pretty sad day.

Adults...

Unlike you anonymai, I only post when I have something to say (and know what I'm talking about) It's not an everyday thing for me- but again, unlike you, I don't have some need to see my every thought onscreen....every day....regardless of how lame or ignorant...

I don't insult entire groups of people,(like ya'll like to do) but rather focus on the stupidest post on the page.

It's not that I think you're all the same person. It's that you're all the same to me.

Which, I assume, is your intent, considering ya'll sign your name the same way...

So go ahead and get yer bowels in an uproar and rant endlessly over coarse language or whatever. It's a great way to keep typing without addressing the fact that you're totally full of beans.

"It's not that I think you're all the same person. It's that you're all the same to me."

Wow, now THERE is a pretty arrogant statement!

I used enjoy reading what WTF? had to say. It was interesting. But some time ago, he got into this defensive state of mind, and all his posts started to be the same. This sad, "I'm better than all of you, I know more about the topic than any of you." etc, etc.

He seemed to lose sight that Tom has provided us all with this blog, where we all get to voice our opinions about things, and to some extent, discuss things.

Most of the folks that post here may say ideas voiced are stupid, but virtually all posts by WTF? insult the person posting.

Yes, I know, WTF? has his right to voice his opinion. He thinks he is better than all the rest of us. Okay. I get that.

I didn't use to regard WTF? as a troll, but increasingly, I'm starting to think so.

(Okay, I'm ready for the predictable barrage of rationalizations and insults)
