Port Angeles Fire Chief to be Interim City Manager

Port Angeles Fire Chief Dan McKeen will be the interim city manager.  He was chosen by a unanimous vote of the City Council.

His contract will allow him to serve for up to 120 days, and he said, "I don't have any intention of applying for the permanent city manager position."

McKeen sounds like by far the best choice from among internal staff.
Hail to the Fire Chief!

Dan is a good choice. But, then they go and hire a recruiting firm(again), for $50,000 +, to find the "best" (somebody from out of state)candidate for the permanent job. How well has that worked for them? These out-of-state CEO-types don't get it, and are always looking for the next step up. At least the Port and the County figured out that there are good "local" people, who are invested in the community and who can do the job.

Yeah, but I bet the council is chomping at the bit to find someone else so they can boost that rate to $24,000 a month... If they can't bankrupt the city with excessive wages, then what's the point of doing anything at all?

Watching the visitors from the cruise ship today, I saw once again what a waste of timer Port Angeles is.

I watched them walk from the ship down Marine Drive, and walk back. Few even carried the bags the Chamber folks gave them, by that point. The trash cans or sidewalks must have been full before they left Westport!

Few carried any bags of purchased items, as they walked back. My friend and I made a bit of a project to see what impact this "shopping bonanza" was having on Port Angeles. Other than a few magazines, very few purchases were seen.

It was "funny" to watch more than one couple make it the beginning of First and Front, and turn around to walk back to the cruise ship. They seemed to decide they had seen enough at that point, and it wasn't worth the walk further into downtown Port Angeles.

They spent all that money booking a vacation cruise, and end up walking down Marine Drive in Port Angeles? Really?

What a mind numbingly stupid bunch of idiots. I had some hope for this town before today.

Really. Mind numbingly stupid.

I could not be more disappointed.

As soon as someone buys my business and home, I'm gone.

No. I'm already gone. I won't subject my family to the stupidity of this town while I wait for a sale. They are far too important.

What a bunch of losers. Any chumps that think Port Angeles has a future are just wasting their money.

Free food (already paid for) on the cruise ships, so they aren't going to eat in town. What is there to buy? Used stuff? Maybe a book? What else is there? Who would really want to go on a cruise and bring their family back a t-shirt from "where?"
Unless we seriously, seriously get our act together as a town, and go for the tourists, and find some destination things for people to come for, it is a joke.

Good message to be putting out on a public blog when you, uh, wanna sell your business and home. Good strategy, man.

I think the new city slogan should be "Don't waste your time"

To the smoke blowing hall monitor: I was hanging out at the old Pen Ply site, seeing if any tourists would pick up a scrap of wood. Nothing. And it's free, too!

Yup, if you can't find a job, if you want to move here to find a job, if your business has been losing money for 3 years and is bleeding your in-laws dry, if you NEED $80,000 a year to get by, or if you like to shop retail in person so you can touch and feel (and steal), best you leave Port Angeles or not move here or stay where you are! Don't be jealous, you can move back when you retire! Or buy a tent and hop on a bus once in a while if you find gas too expensive. But be sure to bring your papers.

Yeah. One of the few "growth industries" of the area has been the influx of retired folks. Look at Sequim, with all the assisted living buildings that have gone up there.

But, what is one of the primary concerns for the elderly? Health issues. You know, like respiratory problems and such.

So, what does Port Angeles do? Allow Nippon to build an incinerator that is going to burn 200,000 tons of wood debris a year, and raise concerns about air quality!!

Wait 'til the retired folks figure out what Port Angeles is up to. Another "industry", down the drain.

Do these folks go to some special school to learn how to screw things up like this??!!

News Flash: The soon-to-be former City Manager apparently stopped paying his mortgage in January. Seems obvious he knew he'd be leaving and wanted to squirrel away as much money as possible. Which means he's gonna be leaving our local bank, First Federal, in the lurch with his short sale. Buy local, Kent? What a slimeball.

Yes, the soon-to-be former City Manager of Port Angeles has been pretty clear about his efforts to get out of Port Angeles for over a year now. Remember he was interviewing for all those other cities, last year. Funny thing, they didn't want him!

If it is true, then shame on Kent. ANOTHER reason to quit paying these "outside" recruiting fims the big bucks to bring in ANOTHER out-of-state City Manager who is just coming here as a stepping stone to somewhere else! Not invested in our community at all! Thank you Clallam County and Port of Port Angeles for bucking the trend to hire only out-of state CEO's!

Better be careful the anonymous ID you hide behind is linked to you and you are walking a fine line.

Well the dude overpaid well after the bubble popped. Wonder who his realtor was!? NOW is a good time to buy!! But the house is listed, obviously a short sale. Pretty bedroom! Common to stop making payments before one lists doing that....some say it increases the chance of the bank approving the short sale.

It will foreclose. Just a hunch.

According to the PDN today, our construction/housing industry is recovering from the "Stunning 2011 Slump"...lol. Good one!

Sure are a lot of rentals popping up. Nice prices too, for having all that granite.

Yes, the number of permits went from last years' 22, to 25. What a recovery! Break out the champagne!

When I was buying up rentals in Port Angeles and Sequim in 06 I looked at this as an open house. I believe it was $310,000. The seller, or realtor, I forget, was touting that it would be a half million dollar house in a year, a no brainer.

Americans are so spoiled. Gas prices are so high due to speculating. Housing was outrageous here because of speculating. Housing is recovering in Seattle due to demand. Nice new houses here are affordable and are selling for $99 a square foot now instead of $200 and it will only get worse as Sequim and the foothills were so overbuilt it's not funny and we just don't have the demand nor banking system to bring back what was. Price accordingly, get retraining out of construction or real estate, and maybe move, and let us move on. If you can afford to stay here, enjoy all the cheap rentals in the very near future.
