Smoke From Asian Fires Affecting North Olympic Peninsula

If you're wondering why it's been so smoggy in the past day or two, this might be the reason.

The smoke from fires in Asia has been wafting across the Pacific and reaching as far as the Olympic Peninsula.

"Loving this weather, isn't global warming great?"

Yes, over 40,000 new high temperature records set across the US since Jan. The last 12 months have set all time high temp records.

80% of BCs forests will be "red and dead" by next year because of climate change. Ocean acidification is now at a rate not seen in 300 million years, with a massive sea life die-off rate not seen in 56 million years.

Fish are dying by the millions in lakes and streams across the US these last weeks because of extreme temps.

Crops across the US are withering in the heat, as extreme drought spreads across the country.

Yeah, isn't global warming great?

We are truly a global village, when we are breathing dirty air from across the ocean (as well as dirty air emitted from foreign corporations located on our own shores). I'm not only sick from the dirty air, but also heartsick at the local ignoramuses who scoff at environmental degradation and the people who are trying to protect public resources --- like clean air and clean water.

80%? Really Sherlock?

All the wood burning contributes to global dimming, not global warming. Water sticks to the particulates created from burning wood, makes more rain, and cools the earth. It counteracts, somewhat, the really really nasty kind of pollution from cars, etc. which is warming the earth - or most of it - and creating climate change - or "fucking extreme weather". We know about this ironic effect, global dimming because those stupid government workers and farmers have been studying evaporation rates for nearly a century. It's confusing and would make blood come out of the ears of nearly everyone. It just can't be! If we stopped burning wood, and God killed all the forests and canceled the thunder and lighting, we'd be screwed - that is if we kept our pick ups.

Let me answer my question for you, cuz if things go to hell they don't have to take the blame, they was just following the advice of the experts.

Never mind that the experts are long gone with your money, your odds of getting things right would be about the same tossing darts at a dart board.

http://www.livesmartbc.ca/learn/effects.html

Yeah, really.

And, if you are following what has been going on around the world for the last year or 15, you will know that the last 15 years have been the warmest on record. The theory of "Global dimming" is really proving to be correct, right?

Beyond these self serving "theories" put out by the oil companies, are the facts. Not computer models or predictions, but what actually has happened.

For thousands of years before the "Industrial revolution", the atmospheric CO2 levels were around 278 ppm (parts per million). 100 years after the start of the "Industrial Revolution", the CO2 levels had risen by about 50 ppm, to 336 ppm in 1979. It took us only 30 years to raise the CO2 levels another 50 ppm, to 386 ppm by 2009.

3 years later, only a few months ago, CO2 levels reached 400 ppm.

Today, US government scientists are attributing the recent severe and extreme weather to human generated "greenhouse gases", are saying the increases accelerating at an alarming rate, and say we should expect increasing severe and extreme weather.

Maybe you will look up what the insurance companies are saying. Tonight, insurance company reps were on the TV news saying the storms are costing billions, and they may discontinue coverage. Who will be footing the bill after big storms?

CBS news had a story last week saying it will cost over $200 billion to address rising sea levels on the East Coast of the US alone, in less than 40 years.

So, believe what you will. It doesn't matter. The impacts are happening now, and only getting worse.

Ah, I knew the "Industrial Revolution" would ultimately get the blame for all that ails us. Uh huh.

So, obviously what we need is a candidate for some local office who understands that the "Industrial Revolution" was wrong and that the 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries have been huge mistakes. Someone who will lead back to the Golden Days of 1795 when we lived in little Eco-Villages.

And say! While we're at it, let's begin here in Port Angeles. Why not turn Port Angeles in a model Eco-Village and get rid of all things "Industrial" and live peacefully with the birds, fish, unicorns and Sasquatch. No internal combustion engines, no smokestacks, no hideous "truck routes," no "resources" being pillaged for profit! Oh joyous day! The air will be pure, the ocean will be cleansed and the Kraken will rejoice!

I'm sure there's a candidate running for a local office with just that idea in mind, right?

Yes. The climate change impacts are happening now and getting worse. But the geniuses at City Hall nonetheless approved permits for an expanded industrial plant located on a sand spit that is barely above sea level. They also approved permits for a medical facility (the Downtown Health Center) that is similarly situated on low-lying land in a tsunami zone. And on and on with the short-sighted and unprofessional "planning" department. Gag.

"Ah, I knew the "Industrial Revolution" would ultimately get the blame for all that ails us. Uh huh."

Yeah, I can see the concept of "Cause and Effect" are pretty hard for some people to grasp.

And that "Either/Or" reactionary approach to problem solving is evident, too.

Clearly, to only obvious solution to a car with engine problems is to get rid of all cars, hunh?

Because hundreds of people die from E. Coli bacteria in contaminated meat means we need to stop eating meat all together, and kill all cows, hunh?

Within 10 years of Kennedy posing the challenge of putting a man on the moon, the technology was developed, and the goal achieved.

Now, with clear evidence that reliance on fossil fuel derived energy has resulted in very serious problems, the clear objective is to find energy sources that do not create these same problems.

Or, we can just spout silly knee jerk rhetoric, keep burning fossil fuels, and create a horrible future for our children, right?

This is the "model" for responsible city management? This is the way you see taxpayers' money should be spent? Those many millions are coming out of Port Angeles residents pockets.

The City wastes money in great quantities on projects of, at best, questionable value or sense. The local so-called conservatives generally applaud these wasteful actions. Many thoughtful local liberals at least try to point out all the waste.

Conservatives actually conserve very little. They mostly blow out hot air, and find ways to waste money THAT THEY LIKE. No fiscal restraint, no long-term vision. Just the "fun" of spending (wasting) our tax dollars.

Plus, every local family has a tweaker or two, or ten, or someone with a hundred dwi's, or twenty violent convictions, and they support local "liberal" (not) judges, who have pretty much ruined our community letting these people out, giving them ten, eleven, twelve, chances - and if you don't agree you are the new breed of HATER, or intolerant person, like me - intolerant of criminals and assholes. The only reason we are literally SEEING with our own eyes, arresting people and rounding them up, is that we have a sudden influx this spring and summer, of "different" people wandering around, and they, the corrupt law around here, don't want to get caught profiling....sad sickos, the conservatives around here.

With cities across the US declaring bankruptcy, I'm wondering when Port Angeles will face the realities of declining revenues. Right now, they are continuing to spend millions on projects like there are no problems. The City is planning on Port Angeles residents to be paying these many millions for years to come.

What if people can't? We saw in last weeks' paper a passing reference to the city not being able to come up with the money to service its' current debt because of declining property tax revenues.

Perhaps you saw how Scranton, PA is now paying its' public employees $7.25 an hour. Wonder how those folks will be able to pay their mortgages, car payments, credit cards, etc. they had committed to before the dramatic decrease in income! If not, then what? More decline in revenue for the city, and then what?

What is Port Angeles' guarantee that these problems will not come here?

I think Anon 6:29 is trying to say that concerns about climate change are unfounded, just the result of scare tactics by the hippies and Barbra Streisand.

Of course Anon 6:29 is right. The 40,000 plus new high teperature records set in the last 7 months are just "liberal "propaganda. The forests in BC aren't really dead and dying. The CO2 levels haven't actually reached 400 ppm. The oceans aren't actually turning more acid, and the massive sea life die-offs aren't actually happening. The people in the midwest and east of the US are actually experiencing an unusually cold spell. The droughts aren't really happening, and commodity futures aren't really reflecting the projected food shortages.

We are all just being brain washed to believe so by the "liberals".

Funny how this "brain washing" seems to always be a one-way deal. The "liberals" are constantly at it, but the "conservatives" are completely immune from it. They always have such pure, clear vision, with pure, patriotic intentions.

You know, like the current phrase about the wealthy being "job creators". The reality that hundreds and thousands of US corporations have located their "headquarters" in tiny Swiss towns such as Zug, and have moved all the billions syphoned off American consumers to off shore accounts somehow escapes that clear vision.

Given a choice to help revitalize America, or hoard the billions made by selling Chinese made products in America in banks outside of the US, paying no US taxes... well, the "job creators" have shown us all clearly what they do.

So, knowing that the use of their product in its' advertised and intended manner is causing billions in property damages, and deaths across the globe, the oil company proceeds to spend billions to produce even more.

What is the difference from the lawsuits against pharmo companies for known side affects to their products?

Why not spend the billions to invent new, "sustainable" energy sources?

Right. The 40,000 high temp records set in the last 7 months in the US alone didn't really happen, and the ocean isn't really getting more acid, etc.

The folks over at Taylor Shellfish company, who are amongst the largest shellfish growers in the area, did not report their larval oyster die-off because of acid seawater.
