Who cares? The port is dirty, dirty, dirty, and I don't see either of these people being capable of starting the needed clean up.

Considering the amounts of money stated to clean it up I don't see how a community of 20 thousand can come up with that much.

But no worries, the human experience will be over in about thirty years anyway. And then the rich can go fuck themselves.

Hey Billy! Have you read " The Limits to Growth"? Documents with computer modeling exactly what you're saying.

No, I haven't read "The Limits to Growth". Don't have to in order to see what is going on.

@ 10:30 AM... Never did depend on the rich for what I had or needed in life, but I did help some of them get richer. Hey, their kids will suffer just as much in the future as everyone elses.

I wouldn't want to bring a kid on this rock the way things are going, they'll just be cannon fodder or as much as slaves to capitalists.

Saw a cool bumper sticker today.

Note to tourists: if you come here and pick up a local, and take them back to your room, to have your way with them, remember two things. First. If you are a tweaker (which means you came over here when you should have just stayed over there, our tweakers are meaner than yours and at the moment many have been "run out" of the forest and it's also partly seasonal) don't run out of "stuff". On the other hand, if the "stuff" is extra strong, that can be just as bad. Second - look the person up on facebook. If one of their seven "likes" is a band with "bloody ax murderer" in the band name, that might give you an idea where your night is going. So, in sum. Leave the nasty and illegal shit at the ferry. It's a small town, bring your Iphone, do your research (we do have citywide broadband IN Port Angeles) you will have fun!

---SARCASM ALERT---

Joke - Don't you hate it, at the EXACT MOMENT you (allegedly) run out of cocaine (or beer/pot etc) you are naked, and there is a juggalo, in his boxers, in the room, holding a knife? I HATE IT when that happens!!

Port Angeles will really move towards a more prosperous future after this election. Things will really be different, with these people elected.

Yeah. Sure.

Was watching a business reporter interviewing the Governor last night, and heard how well the State is doing these days.

Yet, in Port Angeles, people continue to leave, storefronts remain empty for months and years.

Now, with the City's debt limit reached, and monthly City taxes pushed so high, I can't see why anyone would move here.

The best news about the Port election may be that whoever gets elected will likely align with Hallett and leave Calhoun powerless and in the lurch.

I just learned that two more people I know are moving out of Port Angeles. They're a (relatively) young gay couple who were involved with the arts and, at one time, were planning on starting a business here. Now, like so many others, they're getting the hell out of town.

Mind you, in hundreds of other struggling communities and/or neighborhoods, it's the gay folks and/or the artists who come in and spruce things up and raise property values and quality of life. Yet Port Angeles has found a way to drive those very people out, out, out.

More great Clallam County "leadership" on display. Now that all the comments on the PADA fiasco logo are negative AGAIN, maybe next time Bob Lumens (who is clearly doubling down on this loser) will show up wearing two saw blades. One to cut each wrist, Bob?

They are gay? They should move to Port Townsend, not that there is anymore employment there, times are tough everywhere, deal with it.

There are gays in Port Angeles? Sorry, I only know of a few. Half seem like nice couples, the others are insane.

Like, Juggalo insane.

Oh, you who asked... a "Juggalo" is a follower of the rap band "Insane Clown Posse". You see the bumper stickers of a guy running with a hatchet? That's a Juggalo. And there are proportionally way more of them in PA than there should be.

Sequim got smart, and marketed itself towards the retirees. They come with money, no employment needs. AND, they create a few jobs, as they need various services.

But, as Port Angeles keeps saying it only wants "industrial" jobs, or high end car dealerships down on the former Rayonier mill site, with its' excellent drive-by consumer visibility that most retail businesses look for.

I love that guy on the PDN site that said " Port Angeles, often wrong, but never in doubt"!

Stupid, and proud of it.

I really don't understand how the car dealers do well, and they must. It should be as easy to buy a home as it is to buy a car.

The limp wristed here just don’t understand our culture, it’s clear that our idea of good art is all the classic car shows we attend and not that shit on Laurel and in the galleries downtown.

Agreed that there are some indicators that at least a few people who comment on PDN stories are perceptive about the quality of local leadership and decision-making. The "often wrong but never in doubt" saying is sadly accurate.
Look around and see who is getting or who has gotten rich from exploiting the 19th century mentality, and they will be responsible for a substantial portion of the community's woes.

Oh, good. Glad to see that I don't have to worry about anything changing around here. More of the same on the City Council, the Port, and the County Commissioners.

With the kind of successes and forward thinking we've seen over the last couple of years, the LAST thing we need is to change direction, now.

So, I'm thinking sense the Port's mission is Economic Development he'd be the worst choice.

Ok people. Out of a hundred people, AT LEAST ONE will be gay. It doesn't matter where you are. (think Mississippi, sucks for blacks there YET they remain). Please. So, your comments are sort of comical. This is a community of 20,000 people, not 100.

For a small, rural, isolated town, this is a GREAT place for a gay person to live. "Typical" reasons for a gay person to live here - near a very large urban area, it is an international port, and it is ripe for gentrification. It has been quite ripe for some time, with no end in sight! So, there ya go!!!

BBC - Interesting thoughts on segregation. If someone's self identity was tied to being gay, PT would not be my suggestion. It's an illusion, the town has had a thing for rainbows far longer than that became a gay thing and they just refuse to let go. Plus, the typical gay person that helps gentrify an area is a schoolteacher, retail store manager, dental hygienist, public service worker, things like that. The list goes on and on. We are fairly normal, as far as supporting ourselves. In fact, since we tend to be more employed and educated, we are by definition quite normal and good for any communities "stats". If society or a locale becomes more juggaliscious, it's not because of gay people, if that makes sense.

"Art Gallery" owner is a stereotype. There aren't that many art galleries in the world- a tiny percentage of any economy - they are more of a lagging indicator that an area is being gentrified, and this is anecdotal, but most gallery owners are not gay. (we're the people that buy that crappy art, LOL)

Gentrification is a real force that molds this country and EVERYONE takes part. THAT IS the big secret! DUR!

Juggalos are the TEA PARTY of young people/music scene. Hatred, fear... And lying. Except that when the tea party lies, it's plain old lies. When a juggalo lies, it's more of a self awareness issue.

And all that murdering, hate, and extreme womanizing in the lyrics, it's just ENTERTAINMENT! YOU are the hater for hating them! Yes, they actually say that. Wouldn't surprise me if the Koch brothers were behind them, and they created some shill advertising/PR company to rebrand half of rural America, depicting us, through logos, as being lovers of sharp instruments that can easily tear through flesh.

A few 19th century wrongs, to name a few ---
slavery
women being denied the right to vote or own property in their own names
manifest destiny in action, stealing land and sustenance from native americans in favor of white settlers
smallpox

If you're looking for an up-hill battle for progress, Port Angeles is your place.

People have come here for years, thinking the place has "opportunities", but most with any sensitivities leave after a year or two, when they find out the talk turns into frustration.

There ARE communities where people are actually interested in working together for the good of the community.

Oh thank God! The gays are coming! We're saved!!

Honestly, it seems like every few years someone has a new "savior" for Port Angeles... Computer programmers, NOAA, federal grants, outside consultants, PenPly, some other big business... They've all done great jobs, haven't they?

PA needs to stop looking for a Great White Hope from the outside to swoop in and save us. For one thing, it's degrading. For another y'all need to give up thinking this is a such a great place to move to. Remember NOAA didn't move here because of "quality of life"? Employment here is crap, housing and cost of living is expensive, our infrastructure is falling apart, biking and walking is a dangerous joke, our schools are underperforming... Why would anyone want to move here again?

If we really want to "fix" Port Angeles we'd roll up our sleeves and start making life better for ourselves, with an eye on scaling up quality of life in case population grows. A lot of us are starting to do just that but it's slow. There's a lot of pushback. We're sure not sitting around waiting for someone to come "save us" because that ain't going to happen!

Regarding NOAA...I've been to Newport recently, and saw both their facilities there, and the "quality of life" in the town. Hands down, it beats Port Angeles. Unlike the dolts running (ruining) the Olympic Peninsula, the people in Newport seem to have embraced the 21st century, and are making a go of it.

Port Angeles, on the other hand, is still stuck in resource extraction mode, which currently takes the form of feeding people feces fouled crab at the Crap Fest. Yum yum!

But, I doubt many of those that will show up to sit at folding tables and eat crab, care.
