Gee mommie, where did the mountain go? I don't know honey, but I'm calling Port Angeles to find out. Maybe we can get our yard back someday, all washed and filtered and "green".

"To date there have been no adverse impacts to the water table."
Ooops! Update time!
That's really sad, the landslide. Beautiful area, Oso, with all the trees cut, lends great views of the bigger peaks up north. Sad, all turned to gravel now. Of course there is a silver lining. A quarter cubic mile of gravel, possibly more. Will gravel prices go down in western WA? No. Will diamond prices go down? No. Will gravel excavation service/log truck road building service prices go up in Oso? You bettcha! And, once they find the water table, I'm sure it will be found to be FUCKING WONDERFUL.
Another silver lining. For those looking to move to or retire in a town like Darrington, but would like something a bit more isolated, might be some deals soon.
I thunk Green Crow just done logging, silly me.
BBC, they build homes too. Very "green" ones. I want one!
Most of their time is probably spent just managing the vast tracts of land they own in a very responsible, "green" way, and buying new sections. If a large section comes up, they usually buy it. I'd imagine, most of their income these days, in such hard times, is derived from just scooping up interest and dividends from cash assets and such.
Once, a friend of mine, while we were shopping at Sunny Farms, said "Watch this Cassie", under his breath. Then he said, louder, "I just got a job with Green Crow in property acquisition"! Seven realtors (or eight, I forget) were clamoring over the aisles to get to him to talk to him! One lady knocked down a big display of corn cans! All had their arms outstretched, with cards in hand, with these pleading looks in their eyes. It was so funny! Once they realized he was kidding, we all had a good laugh. Sequim is so fun!
Article in the Everett Herald about Green Crow's land dealings with the State in Oso:

Just gives me the WARM FUZZIES how they give previously logged land, oh no, they sell it, back to the state.
Article in the Arlington Times about the insane amount of gravel truck traffic in Arlington and possibly illegal/not allowed overuse of roads while carting off the gravel at the foot of a mountain in Oso:

That poll result is encouraging. That 544 people bothered to even cast a vote on that issue is more than I would expect from a community that doesn't seem to react to any of the crazy things local government does here.
Maybe things are changing, finally.
I know a man that is retired from Green Crow, ex big shot there, nice guy. I don't know how well the peons make out but the big shots there make damn good money.
Well the germs, I mean terms, "Green Crow" and Oso are not turning up in a news search, yet.
Great before/after shot:

Finding this website, I was able to determine the missing mile of land and the missing 40 or so families are a mile or so east of the gravel pit, not exactly near it. The entire top of the mountain is clear cut, as is much of the area, above the neighborhoods and highway area. One can see that in the google satellite, and can easily find the area, using the white rocks on the side of that one mountain as a guide (from the link above). All those trees that were once up there sucked up a lot of water, now the water seeps through the ground, runs down slopes, not a pretty site. Over a hundred dead now. Of course, nine inches of rain like that in a short period, in the PNW is so rare. Or, was rare. I hope they don't own all that land, that might not be good news for the PA housing market, but if one of your neighbors is Greedy, I mean Green Crow, odds are all of your neighbors are Green Crow. At least around here.
9:07 - Shame works wonders. I wouldn't get too excited, however, as it's rigged, or temporary. Plus, any corrupt idiot that gets replaced around here, do you think the niece/nephew will do any better?
I'm waiting for our hospital to slide into the bay, that'll be a doozy that makes national news.
WHERE THE MOUNTAINS SLIDE INTO THE SEAS.
hahahahaha
Hey Meatheads.........
How about addressing the PDN Poll Question.
What a bunch of pathetic Morons.
Anon 11:14 says "- Shame works wonders. I wouldn't get too excited, however, as it's rigged, or temporary"
Maybe. But what if it is neither? What if the ole timers are dying off (which they are)? What if the young bucks have moved somewhere else to feed their families (latest article says there are about 700 fewer employable people here, now)?
You know what they say: "The only constant is change".
5:49 - This is at the top of the main page of Tom's blog:
"If you want to discuss something that's not related to one of the current posts, go ahead and leave your comment anywhere, at any one of the posts" BTW, Tom has over 10,000 profile views. Other guy: 156. This is the "public" profile meter. I imagine sometimes hoards of pathetic, whiney, fake, civil (ha ha) local progressives SEARCHING for topics all organized and neat online, probably drives up Toms numbers, them checking constantly (from different servers, as this is a small town) to see what PDN article Tom links to, and how that causes such chaos, which is not fair (Tom's OBVIOUSLY inflated profile hit number) but I think it's funny.
7:18 - Good point. I've been monitoring/relishing the decline of the "Grannygencia" here for several years, and they are stubborn lot. Many don't get out but they do all vote.
BBC - Most effective THP (Tree hugger propaganda) I've EVER seen! It's LOCAL, time specific, funny, catchy, biting, makes you think, AND...foretelling!!!
YOU'RE THE MAN!!!
No other news. Except that Mika and Joe, their heads almost exploded as they tried to get their bearings on the Seattle Times report that a Geo. report from 15 years ago foretold of this slide happening. It was a brief segment, and they said MSNBC would be on top of it all day. Things up here just don't get good coverage, but if the death toll really is over 100, this might. Case in point, the MN bridge falling down, vs. the I-5 bridge.
Seems to me, the state, at least, is negligent in Oso. Perhaps more entities as well. I bet the WalMart in Smoky Point has sold out of paper shredders, regardless.
New Wikipedia category ideas:
Corrupt Western US Towns (as in lets rape the fragile, irreplaceable landscape, as much as we can, where we can, and profit from it, all the while becoming part of the system that is "protecting it" and sell it back to retirees and the "workers") in which old Geomorphology Reports Really Need to be Dug Up.
I hope these people hadn't moved in yet. How sad.

Re: Profile views.
Really. Come now.
First, I don't see the two blogs as being in any kind of competition. Both provide much needed forums for people to voice their views. Period.
Number of views? Tom's been here for how many years now? The "other guy" (assuming they are male!) a few months. It doesn't require any nefarious "rigging" to have hugely different numbers, considering.
Okay?
If we had a real newspaper, we would eventually get an article titled: "Are our neighborhoods at the foot of steep clear cuts, 2nd growth, and 3rd growth forests safe?" (no) Or, "What will happen when we inevitably get twelve inches of rain in one day, in the rainy season?" (we're all going to die) Or, "If an old growth grove on a slope is logged, disturbing large root masses that take centuries to develop, does it take more than a few decades for the ground to eventually become unstable?" (Ummm, looks that way) They did manage to showcase erosion, with the picture of the chalet they had as their main photo/article yesterday. They should have stuck a puppy in the window when they photographed it, people would be out there moving the chalet today.
Tom's been here for how many years now?
Enough that he has figured out that we are not fixing a fucking thing with our blogs.
After inventing and creating the internut I thought it would be cool to make blogs so mankind could get together and fix the world and its ills.
I guess I'm just a fucking idiot.
hahahahaha
The real people that run this land, the real estate and building industry folks, don't want the "newspaper" to talk about these types of problems. Bad for business.
That's why the PDN is all "happy news" showcasing all the events you can attend, cuz everything is always fun and fine, fine, fine in Port Angeles.
Com'on folks line right up. I have the house for you.
Not that it's scientific, but the PDN poll today is extra depressing. They just can't wait to have less customers.
Companies have feelings and deserve protection! If something huge is wrong with a particular organization, it's some pesky individual troublemaker, often in a different entity, that is causing the trouble!
Channel 4 just reported that a gravel truck overturned today, and blocked access to the landslide area for a while.
