Sheila Roark Miller to speak at PABA meeting

Clallam County community development director Sheila Roark Miller will be the guest at this Tuesday's meeting of the Port Angeles Business Association.  She will be discussing marijuana operations in unincorporated areas and the land use (i.e. NIMBY) issues that have been erupting lately.

The only good thing that came out of "Port Angeles United", was the general idea. That we should work together for the good of the whole community.

Clearly, as that situation has evolved along, it was always just a scam for a few of the same players to reorganize things for their control, and control of the money. Note the comments and response to the PADA decision by PAU leadership.

But, in the community as a whole (not just the so-called business community), the idea of caring about somebody other than themselves is right. You know that old saw, "United we stand, divided we fall".

NIMBY is one of the greatest motivators. "I got mine, to hell with what you want."

We see that a lot in Port Angeles.

Nice but short article on the Discovery Trail today. I agree it's a positive draw for the region, but it's got a lot of work left to do. Major kudos to the people who have done all the hard work so far!

The article does mention services along the trail. My Seattle friends often talk about running bike trails with "beer runs". I forgot exactly what they call it, but micro-breweries along the trail where they bikers can stop and rest (and sample of course) before going on to the next one. It sounds like a fun idea and a popular one.

Speaking of beer joints, have any of you been in that one on the waterfront? Barhop or something?

My friend from Victoria and I were looking for a beer and fries last weekend, and (of course) Gastropub was packed with a waiting list, So, I thought we could try that place.

Wow! The stench of stale beer greeted us at the door. What a dive. I couldn't believe that is what inhabits the new multi-million dollar waterfront of Port Angeles.

Obviously, we turned around and left.

So, this is what visitors to Port Angeles get?

Sequim, the number one retirement spot? IT SUCKS! Because of the old assholes. Go to any restaurant that offers chicken fried steak, seriously, anytime, listen to them, uuugggh.

PA is bigger and cheaper and our old people are nicer. Come on grandma and grandpa, move here! Grandma likes her weed, Grandpa can't stand Rush and loves chicken fried steak, will be an easier move than Sequim!

Anon 4:35: Each to their own. Barhop is a great place. It's not upscale like the Gastropub, but their beer (they brew their own) is excellent. There's a reason that place is packed on weekend nights if there's a band playing.

Washington leaders sure like to make it hard to grow and sell pot here. But what the hell, those that want it will still get it, and from the cheapest sources they can get it from.

I just returned from Newport, Oregon, where hard booze is a lot fucking cheaper, and I suppose pot is also.

And Newport is a lot cooler place for the tourists to go to. If there is one thing the PA leaders can do right it is fuck up everything.

What's wrong with liking Rush? "Tom Sawyer" is a classic!

"Barhop is a great place"

Yeah, if you like the dingy, stale beer atmosphere.

I was there on a weekend. Late afternoon, and the band was just setting up. Gastro was packed with lines out on the sidewalk. Barhop was just about empty.

I couldn't get past the smell to even try one of their beers. And, if the place stinks like that, how clean is it, anyways?

Gastropub has good but expensive food and usually a good selection of beers but it's always crowded and loud.

I prefer Barhop for having a lot of open space and not blasting loud music.

It IS a functioning brewery so it's not uncommon to have some smells but I've been there plenty of times and never been bothered by it.

They do need a little more variety in their taps though. I appreciate the focus on local brewers but it's all hoppy bitter pales, ambers and IPAs with the occasional stout.

Hopefully they can get their kitchen installed and offer some reasonably priced pub food soon too.

This is a pretty funny comment.

Let's unpack it, for giggles.

So, the observation is that Gastropub has good food, a good selection of beers, and is always crowded.

The next observation is that Barhop smells, needs more variety of beers, hopes kitchen will get installed soon so that they can offer pub food, and it has lots of open space. As in, not crowded.

Looks like Gastropub offers what is expected, and in very popular.

Looks like Barhop smells, doesn't offer what is expected, and is not popular. Except when a live band shows up. Which raises the question: do they come for Barhop, or the band?

I don't frequent either. Just sayin'..

@ 6:59 - You seem to think everyone wants the same thing out of a bar.

Barhop doesn't smell. I like that Barhop focuses on locally made beer. I like the open space and relative quiet. So I like Barhop.

Gastropub has good but expensive food and good beer selection but I don't like how cramped and noisy it is. So I don't like it as much.

It's ok to like something and still have constructive criticisms. It's ok to not like something too, but there's no need to convince everyone else to not like it too.

They are different places for different people. What's wrong with that?

I go to the only bar in town where you can smoke and cuss like a trouper so I have no idea what the other bars around here are like.

No, I don't expect everyone to want the same thing out of a bar. And, I'm certainly not trying to convince anybody of anything.

The only reason I made a comment in the first place was because I was so appalled that a dive like Barhop is one of the first places a tourist waiting for the ferry may show up, as the bar is one of the only businesses on the newly developed Port Angeles waterfront.

You may not see any problems with it, and that is wonderful. But I assure you the place reeked of stale beer, at the doorway, only a short time ago. On a weekend when there were tourist wandering around downtown, looking for something to do.

Perhaps this is the highest and best use for that site, given we're talking about Port Angeles.

Why expect anything else?

9:06 - the only reason you made the comment is that you are an asshole!

It doesn't stink, they pay rent, taxes, shut the fuck up!

9:06 - Furthermore, it's so obvious...you are one of those types in town, that makes his money in giant chunks, 3k, 4k, 5k at a time, maybe much more bigger chunks of cash, ripping people off the entire time. And your business is drying up, or has dried up. (lack of customers)

The fact that someone can make a go of it, running an honest business, that does not rip people off, that includes repeat customers, and a decent product that isn't expensive and not an incredible waste of money, irritates you.

Again, this is Port Angeles. Why expect anything else?

And people wonder why more and more storefronts in Port Angeles go empty, and stay empty.

0-20 points: You are a virtually pure homo sapien. Feel free to build bridges, compose symphonies, and overrun the world.
20-40 points: A slight Neanderthal strain means that you will occasionally have spells of primitive behavior, crawling around on all fours and whooping wildly. If you live in California, no one will notice.
40-60 points: You can still function quite well in the modern world, but avoid eating in fancy restaurants lest your table manners give you away.
60-80 points: Your Pleistocene heritage is predominant. You should consider a career in pro football.
80-100 points: Unfortunately, your genetic makeup is Grunt City; there is no place for you in human society. A career in politics is recommended.
