Ferry Service Between Port Townsend and Seattle

The ferry between Port Townsend and Seattle is scheduled to end on January 6th.

There's a petition being circulated to persuade Washington State Ferries officials to keep this ferry service running permanently. Here's a link to the petition.

Kyle Montgomery is a Port Ludlow resident who's been commuting to Seattle for ten years via Bainbridge Island. He's been leading the campaign in King, Jefferson and Clallam Counties to make the ferry service permanent. He said: “The message to Clallam County and to the West is here is an opportunity for Port Townsend to be the gateway instead of congested Bainbridge or Kitsap County.”

It’s questionable whether the State of Washington could or would come up with the money for this, even if there are enough petition signatures. But getting to Seattle via Port Townsend would be a lot easier than driving to Bainbridge Island.

I've been doing the semi daily communte to Seattle from Port Angeles for over 10 years now. Currently I am working in Pioneer Square so its possible that I could use the PT to downtown walk-on to get there but its certainly not any more convienient nor faster than to take the Bainbridge boat. If I were to turn north at Discovery Bay, go 11 miles in the wrong direction and get on a boat that is much slower then my car, I will get into Seattle later than if I just went onto Winslow. Its an interesting novelty but my day is already long enough so I will pass on it.

Now take the Hood Canal bridge out of the equation (when it closes) and its a much more attractive solution.

The City of Port Angeles has contracted with a government agancy to build a teleportation device that will take you from the courthouse (actually, the teleportation device will be housed in a un-used storage closet) to the Gateway Transit Center (or somewhere really close)! The cost is next to nothing when you think of how easy and convenient this new device will be and how many people will make use of it.

Do we really want a bunch of Seattle yuppies discovering Port Townsend and Port Angeles? Once they do there won't be any turning the clock back. Careful what you wish for.
