Historic Building in Sappho Burned

A 98-year-old house in Sappho was destroyed by a fire yesterday. The house was originally the headquarters of the Clallam Lumber Company.

Firefighters think the blaze started in the basement and spread quickly throughout the rest of the house, which had no fire stops.

I’ve only driven through that area a few times. It’s such beautiful scenery, as well as being a focal point of West End history.

no fire stops, no sprinkler system....
Sounds to me like it was a fire waiting to happen, and as usual, no one protects history around here.

It is sad to lose a historic structure like that. I have seen the building in person numerous times over the years and have always been curious about it. It always seemed incongruous with its surroundings in a way, and always caused me to wonder about the people who lived there over the years.

Money to upgrade old places like that always seems in short supply. Its sad.
