“On The Boardwalk” Building Might Become Artists’ Studio

As you may remember, about a year ago local artists Bob Stokes and Paul Labrie wanted to rent the On The Boardwalk site for a studio. The city turned them down, but now they’re reconsidering.

The former On The Boardwalk Restaurant (across the street from the ferry terminal) has been empty for several years.

Bob Stokes and Paul Labrie want to create a metal-sculpture and glass-blowing studio in the building. It seems like a much better use for the building. And tourists getting off the ferry presumably would rather see an art studio than a boarded-up restaurant.

I'd love to see the building being used again, even if not for a restaurant. I never ate there when it was 'On the Boardwalk', but have good memories of eating there with my dad when it was 'Pete's Pancake House" and 'The Boarder Cafe'

I feel it might be a good location for an artists' studio. I hate to see it just sitting vacant, so I hope they are able to rent it!

Ah, I didn't know that the city had bought that property.

And why in the hell is the city buying commercial properties anyway? Their only function is supposed to be providing essential services to the business areas.

Electrical service, water, paved streets, sidewalks, things like that. No more than they provide to everyone else.

They have no business being in business in commercial areas.

I don't think that artists can make a living out of it considering the tourist traffic in this town and what it would cost to rent it, but whatever.

The city may as well get a little income out of them until they go broke and move on.

Anon 6:45: The city was buying up property to tear down for the Gateway project. The Boardwalk building was probably part of that. I don't know if they pulled eminent domain on them or not, but I remember thinking what they did to the Budget building was kind of shady.
