Performance Review for Port Angeles Downtown Association

Eighty-one downtown business owners have signed a petition asking the City to examine whether the Downtown Association is fulfilling its contract. Kent Myers said the City will conduct the review because of the large number of downtown merchants who signed the petition. He said:

I think anytime you have between 80 and 100 business signing a petition of that nature, I think it's a serious issue and that we have to get to the bottom of their concerns as soon as possible.”

This story was also covered by KONP.

There are eighty-one downtown businesses? Really?

I mean, from the way folks talk about how empty downtown is you'd think there was just five or six businesses and seventy-plus boarded up storefronts.

Eighty-one downtown businesses, eh?

Once again the Port Angeles tradition of hiring relatives, friends and flunkies goes down in flames. Does anyone really, really think that, after a (supposedly) national search for an executive director, that Barb Frederick was THE BEST choice? Gosh! And she just happens to be a local! A local who will make no waves, make no decisions, and do her darnedest to not make any enemies. We can see how well that's worked out.

I know people who were involved with the hiring process when Barb got "selected." There were people who applied with real-world skills and experience and education. People who could have done the job well and made a difference. But, that would have meant they were showing independence and true leadership - something the PADA Board is clearly not going to allow.

So the self-defeating behavior of so many of those in power in Port Angeles continues. Why hire someone qualified to help grow our downtown economy when we can hire Barb the Boob instead? Let's create a sure-to-be-controversial (and expensive) PDA in secret and then hope for the best. Let's decide (in secret again) to close the pool, while keeping the funds flowing freely to Glenn Cutler and his cronies. And yes, Edna DID help drive the Farmer's Market out of downtown - even though they sell FOOD and she sells COOKING SUPPLIES. And on and on. This town has so much potential, but it keeps being hobbled by "leaders" who seem to have a death wish.

In closing, please remember it's an election year. We can change some of these suicidal tendencies by electing intelligent, informed people. Help turn the tide - VOTE.

Once again the anony-mice come scurrying out whatever dark holes they live in! Once again the air is filled with the high pitched whinings of the nega-trons!

Those of us with Positive Attitudes and who are higher spiritual beings can see things in a better, more positive light and realize that the anony-mice and nega-trons have no power because of their Limited Minds!

A great Eastern sage, Master Po Kih Mon once said: "Beginning as mist in the high mountains, developing into a flowing river, maturing into the boundless ocean." This has been adapted to the fortune cookie as "You will take an ocean voyage." but those of us who are Higher Spiritual beings, filled with Positive Energy, recognize Master Po Kih Mon's words of wisdom.

Master Po Kih Mon also said: "More is less, less is more, more or less." Think about that and perhaps your limited minds will stretch a bit.

Please consider how your negative mindset hurts downtown. Please consider how one anony-mouse can hurt a blog. Please consider how much a Positive Attitude can help you to become a higher spiritual being - like me!

Please consider the eternal Now-ness of ME!

Drew, who is obviously a stooge of the established PADA order?

Nicole, who has no agenda beyond giving kids something to "do" downtown?

Cody, the obvious old council stooge?

Or the incumbents who are a collection of stooges, ninnies and cronies?

Not much hope for realistic change in this election cycle!

Yes, let the sun shine in, Port Angeles. The sun not only enlightens us, it purifies and clarifies. You just can't help but be happy and positive when the sun is shining in beautiful Port Angeles!

Now when I said that 93 million people had just freed themselves from despotism, I meant Home Despotism, as in the ugly, negative big box hardware store. That place, yes. 93 million people have turned their backs on all that and returned to positive mom 'n pop hardware stores. Assuming, that is, that those mom 'n pop place still exist. But let's not quibble folks, let's smile and be happy in this good news.

Now, as an eternal optimist I can find much good in the news that Borders Books will be liquidating their remaining chain of stores. Sure I can, can't you? There was never a Borders Books here in Port Angeles so a store was never closed and no one (here) lost their jobs. Isn't that great? That's what I call a win-win situation!

I must go now. I have more upbeat optimism to share but no, really, I must go. I'm counseling Rupert murdoch and helping him look on the bright side. If there's anyone who can find a silver lining for ol' Rupe, it's me, me, wonderful me!

Port Angeles in decline? Remember it used to have 3 ferries running to Victoria every day, and people sleeping on cots outside, waiting for the next days' ferry runs.

Today, two of the three ferries are gone, and no one is lining up on the streets for the next days's run.

More recently, there were 6 flights out of Port Angeles on Kenmore Air, now there are three, and they can't fill those.

That is those business's response to the current situation. Not rhetoric.

Yes, Randall knows the "real Port Angeles" because he has been here for 8 months, and has done his "research". Research that made him conclude all the posts on this blog under "Anonymous" are made by one person. Yeah, a real credible person!

Randall wants Port Angeles to be something it isn't. He is trying real hard to recreate reality.

Now let's look at Billy's original post:

"Helen wanted a sundae so I took her to the Dairy Queen and there was some of those punk teens that some complain about, blocking the drive into the parking spots.

I pulled right to them and honked my horn and one over six feet that thinks he is a tough shit started swearing at me.

I learned those words long before he did I don't let punk hoods intimidate me, especially when I'm packing a gun.

"Get out of the way you fucking fuck or I'll make hamburger out of you."

They moved down the street."

H'mmm ... I don't see any reference to "gun waving" here.

You're being more than a little hysterical, RCP, but your shameless distorting of the facts is worthy of Rupert Murdoch or the PDN. And calling Billy a "Monkey Boy" is not being a "posi-tron".

(Usually people talking about local issues while you want to drone on endlessly about the national economic crisis) You complain about trolls, and then post asinine "Random C Puke" idiocy ad nauseum. Gee, are there any mirrors in that glass house you live in?

Your poor head is so far up the ass of pessimism that you’re absolutely blind to anything positive that might be going on here. (Karen Rodgers can’t get herself elected dog catcher, Edna Peterson is reduced to a blubbering laughing stock, Larry Williams skipping town, PADA in open revolt, the old guard is losing its grip, etc.) This stuff is kind of icky to watch, but still show signs of positive movement. But of course you can’t acknowledge any of that because it just doesn’t square with your” Port Angeles is Hell on Earth” theory.

Sometimes I long for a time before the internet, when people like you were content to sit in their lonely rooms drinking cheap wine (whine?) and passing judgment on the world around them, quietly.

Hunh? From my own experience, reading through the PDN, talking to folks I run into through the day, and reading posts here reveal all kinds of reasons to be wary about investing any time, energy or money into Port Angeles. I don't know about anybody else, but that it what concerns me. I'm not out to insult others. No money in that.

After a number of years working to better Port Angeles via the local organizations and agencies, I quit. I got so tired of the in-fighting, nepotism, and virtual corruption. Even "WTF?" has commented extensively about this, too.

"WTF?" is right, kinda. Karen Rogers might not be able to be elected dog catcher in this town, but there are almost half the voters who still support her kind of politics. Look how close the last election results have been.

And, when we elect the "alternative", what happened? Look at Betsy Wharton. Nice person, but still voted with the "old guard". Look at Brad Collins. Same thing. Look on the Plannning Commission. Same thing.

More recently, tax payers money being shoveled at Pen-Ply so good ole' boy Grant Monroe can have a staging platform for his business interests. Was that ever publcly disclosed, when the council endorsed the last bail out for Pen-Ply? Were they even told by staff?

Other than Max, there is not much real change.

And:

What I have seen on this blog is that there is one person who posts as "Anonymous". She posts obsessively and negatively. She posts and then posts again to support her own posts.
The posters like BBC, WTF, Positive Attitude, and PAnerd and others with screen names are willing to engage in discourse and discussion. Anonymous is not willing to do that. Anonymous is a classic "confusion troll" and cyber bully."

there are enough of "us" Anonymous that we had -- at one point -- mentioned having coffee together. The only problem is, it's a small town, and because of that, we're wary to actually show ourselves, because of what repercussions it may have in our greater lives.
Some of us own businesses. Some of us have reasons to not want to "be out-ed". Others would be shockingly familiar faces. Others would lose their jobs (most certainly). It's a small town, and it doesn't take much to get on the wrong side of some. Doesn't take much to be "blackballed" (and not the ferry) in this town.
The long time "status quo" is that a few families (who own the most land, by the way) are the ones who pull strings, make this town "us-v.s.-them".
I bought a house from one of the old founder families. Nothing in it is to code. (It was built a while ago.) There were outright lies on the contract, in the appraisal, home inspection (done by a relative of the seller, I found out later), and the surveying (totally off). Its been a nightmare from day one, and if you've ever heard the expression "can't fight city hall", without a flow chart of family relationships, I have no idea who IS part of the old-boys-network (who will lie to my face, and laugh about it later) and who will actually help me.
Meanwhile, I have had contractors give me bids several hundred times higher than I could have gotten in Seattle. I've had work never finished, take much longer than anticipated, and had so-called contractors take the deposit and then never show up for work. And the result? Nothing. No one takes anything seriously here IF YOU AREN'T 3rd or 4th generation, or if you aren't married to, sleeping with, or otherwise connect to the right people.
The joke of it is the Washington State Attorney's office admits that it's "the wild west" in Clallam county. We're seen as a bunch of renegade hillbillies with a law unto ourselves. No one can make heads nor tails out of it, and when there IS an investigation, half the records are destroyed as soon as word-of-mouth reaches this godforsaken corner of the world.
I'm not paranoid. I just never knew there was such a rats nest of corruption that seems to be the culture out here. Until the old "power brokers" drop dead, and their totally incompetent, spoiled kids mentally check out (drugs, drink) and some new blood flows in, nothing is going to change.
Sad truth.
It is very much Peyton Place, along with a heavy dose of Animal Farm and Deliverance. YEEE HAW. Ma and Pa Kettle live.

well, i see after reading the posts here that the anonymous poster who branded Drew as a stooge, has concluded that anyone who actually works to improve things is in fact a stooge. futher, anyone who wants a question answered or a conversation on a subject is treated to a quick listing of their possible mental disorders.

randall's humorous post regarding cyber terrorists is starting to sound more real than funny.

Paladin sez: "..anyone who wants a question answered or a conversation on a subject is treated to a quick listing of their possible mental disorders."

You really should read some of the comments here, mostly by all those "Anomnymous", to see the diversity of topics that actually HAVE been discussed.

It is Randall who, since coming here, has devoted the bulk of his posts insulting the majority of the participants here.

Should we go back, and count how many of his posts actually "discuss" ANYTHING, versus the ones that insult people here in one way or another?

I must be off, the tactical room is buzzing tonight. Read this and then feel free to return to your regularly scheduled "stuff"!

"At a checkpoint near the front lines in the town of al-Qualish, as the two sides lobbed rockets at each other, a young rebel fighter with a rifle dating from the Italian occupation in the first half of the 20th century shouted to a reporter, “Thomas Jefferson good!”

WTF? You are an idiot. Tell me, exactly, what your problem is.

To quote: "You can bet Ma and Pa Kettle would have done their homwork and not have gotten snookered in the first place..."

First, you do realize that Ma and Pa Kettle were characters in Betty MacDonald's book (the Egg and I) based on some of her neighbors in the area (on the Olympic Peninsula). The family who believed the characters were based only on them were the family of Albert and Susanna Bishop. Some say that the Egg and I "spawned a perception of Washington as a land of eccentric country bumpkins like Ma and Pa Kettle." When, in fact, she shouldn't have tainted the whole state when it is obvious, in the years since, that it is the Olympic Peninsula that is full of eccentric country bumpkins.
Now, tell me, exactly HOW I should have KNOWN that the real estate agent, the sellers, MY real estate agent, the appraiser, the home inspector, and the title company were all in bed with each other?
We have a very incestuous little community.

Oh golly, Papa and I just knew that Snooki person was a part of this. Lisa just idolizes her. We have tried to explain how trash talking and getting drunk is not a job; but then she says Snooki does it and get's paid so that is what she wants. She even entered a Snooki look alike contest last year. When she didn't win she had a relapse to those bag over the head problems.
Oh, wait does that say snookered? Gosh, I may need new glasses. Nevermind.

Thanks for being understanding.

Ok then Einstein, Let me break it down for you. First I’m fully aware of the Betty McDonald book, as well as the movies with Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride. Second, unlike you, I am not convinced I know everything, so when I moved to Port Angeles I Rented for a while until I got the lay of the land. I asked around, read the paper, and when it was time, found and honest realtor who had my best interests in mind. Found a decent place bought it … no worries. Easy Peasy. But of course, you’re so smart; you got rooked by the quaint rubes you feel so superior to. And now you blame everybody else for your stupidity. Something tells me that’s pretty much the norm for you. But don’t listen to me, I’m an idiot.

Anon 4:30, don't take WTF?s' comments so personally. He is heavily invested in Port Angeles, and defends it in the most asbsurd ways. Just look back at his posts, and laugh.

You'll see this weird sentiment you've likely already encountered: unless your famlies' family, going back a 100 years or so, were born and raised here, you're fair game for all kinds of abuse. No sympathies, just sneers. Unfortunately, you're not the first to be screwed by the local good ole boys.

And in some wierd way, WTF? aligns himself with that crew.

Rants against Karen Rodgers and Larry Williams. Sure. They are "outlanders", not born and raised here.

Yeah, you're an idiot for trusting people. A fool for believing what you were told. A bad person who should not " ..let the door hit ya where the dog shoulda bit ya." because you accepted what the title company told you.

Welcome to Port Angeles.

WTF I did not rent for a while, I visited, liked it, found a place, and purchased.
I've purchased before, in several places (including Seattle) and wasn't a neophyte. Hell, bought property in the EU, so believe me, not naive. However, elsewhere I found a modicum of professionalism. NOT FOUND HERE.
Here it is screw or be screwed, and buyer beware. You cannot foresee that.
Glad you are so damn educated and smart, and smug. You, obviously, fit right in.
So who have you screwed, cheated, or lied to this week? Doesn't the town have a quota? Hope you won't be thrown out if you don't meet expectations.
Love you, too, WTF? Hopefully the pooch will screw you where the door should have hit YOU.

Annonymous whiner #2:

I’ve bought and sold real estate in Seattle too. No sleazy types there, no sir… Actuaaally, I used the same methodology there as I did here, so it all worked out just fine. I always get MY OWN inspection (125.00 vs. 250,000 plus seems like a reasonable precaution.) You had a good experience in Seattle so Seattle is all good. I really think you and the other anonymous experienced some kind of failure here and simply can’t accept it. So blame the place, blame the people, but don’t look at yourself. You can’t imagine anyone being happy here because you’re not. Your assumption that I must have ripped somebody off is your own pathology. We must be stupid, or crooked because we have succeeded where you failed. The reality is shitty people exist EVERYWHERE. So do good people. And so do people who whine and moan about their situation… Incidentally, there have been two more articles in the PDN regarding the changes and controversy with PADA that we’ll never get to, because we need to discuss your pathetic inability to cope. That’s WAAY more important. After all, it’s ALL about you…

You know, maybe it is way past time to quit egging the Trolls on. "If you argue with an Idiot, he will drag you down to his level, and then beat you with his experience." (author unknown) We have people who think they are too funny, or too smart, or too experienced for the rest of us, and that we should all bask in their wonderfulness. They are really just too conceited.

I hope to continue to appreciate any relavant comments made, on any subject, even when they don't align with my own. Thank you.

PADA articles in PDN..let's see "Barb: no comment" And, again, "Barb: no comment" No one else is commenting either.
So what is there to talk about?
The executive (clerk) director acts like SHE IS the PADA (which she is not, she's supposed to let the president of the board be the figurehead). The board comes and goes, changes totally, yet nothing ever changes. Why? Culture comes from the top and the only consistent is Barb.
Their spreadsheets on finances have NEVER added things up right. The Executive (clerk) buys things that the board hasn't approved and then pays herself back. The stated mission is to aid downtown, but the reality is only a very few get any help, the rest get a bogus email missive that is so full of happy talk it has caused severe retching, if not outright vomiting.
WTF? Whats to talk about? The PDN is hardly the investigative journalism model of excellence or voice of our community. If anything, they have profited by the nuzzling and caressing that has gone on between the Executive (clerk) and their crack, johnny-on-the-spot sales executive (lackey) which has caused many dollars of PADA money to flow from the organization to the rag of journalistic excellence (NOT). For what? To promote Downtown Dollars (lame). To promote Girls Night Out (presumably for transvestite trainees as it always happens during Esprit). To promote a sidewalk sale? To do, yet another, Twilight promotion?
Hell, the PDN's current "top of the fold story" says that the "Twilight MEGA-STARS discuss new film" Yeah. That is news, right? Who cares?
Not me. Used to care. Burned out.

Well ok, here’s some stuff… What percentage of the PADA do 81 signatures make? Is it significant? Are you buying the old director’s resignation? Was he forced out as a scapegoat? What about the new director? Is this change window dressing, or what? How is Barb reviewed? Is she on a contract, or is her employment open ended? Who decides? I don’t know if I’ve EVER heard anything positive about that woman. Now, the city forks over 20 grand for “Main Street”, yet charges x for parking? What’s up with that? It’s like giving your kid an allowance and then charging him rent.

WTF, you are one of the few here who make sense. All the "anons" read like someone talking to themself to appear to be a majority. If they cannot understand simple internet conventions like choosing a screen name, how can they expect to deal with problems in real estate deals or business issues like the PADA?

Here's another joke on the downtown: the "Wayfinding" signs the City is paying thousands upon thousands of dollars for.
The City's web site has photos of a few of the signs, and Nathan West's department is soliciting public comments on them. At least now the City is giving us a clue as to where the signs are located. I had been curious and looking for them and never could find any. It turns out there are supposed to be six such signs, four of which I drive by every day. I guess they are only supposed to attract the attention of pedestrians, because the lettering is way too small for a passing motorist to read. They are also placed lower than regular traffic signs, and so can be totally blocked from view by passing trucks or vans if you're on the outside lane.
What genius decided that it would help people "find their way" if the city fastened a tiny, detailed street map of downtown to the top of a ten foot pole?
