I think a better vision would be that these kind of activities are the only ones that burn fossil fuels.

In the grand scheme of things the amount of fuel burnt is minute compared to the amount burned as we go about our daily lives in our 3000 pound personal transports.

RCP also, I believe, likes bucks coming here, and as I understand it they'll bring in some big bucks that weekend.

The "Extreme Sports Park" website says campers can start camping at the track on Thursday.
Noisy fume-spewing boats disturbing the peace; a beer garden for the spectators; porta-potties for sanitation. Oh yeah --- and lots of extra traffic and dust from the cars and camping rigs coming and going over the unpaved fields.
Sounds like something the PABA would support as economic development.

The Dept. of Ecology has issued a cease and desist order to Dan Morrison for taking water from a pond, rather than from the sources he was allowed to under his permit. Unfortunately, the order only stops them taking the water in an illegal fashion, not from holding their races. But this does show us all (Hello? Dry Creek Association?) that these guys don't intend to play by the rules or be good neighbors.

I don't know about Anon 3:49 PM Saturday, but economic development I would support would, for starters, include:
Refurbish the high school's auditorium to make it a better performing arts venue
Get rid of the ugly signs and billboards all over the HWY 101 entrance to town and along Front Street.
Improve amenities for residents, including updating or replacing the community swimming pool.
Plant trees along streets to enhance the streetscape and reduce the ugly factor of dusty expanses of barren concrete sidewalks.
Cut down brush and create view corridors so that people can better connect visually with the waterfront.
Provide training and educational opportunities to fill positions in skilled trades needed by our growing industries such as Westport Shipyward, Lev-X, and ACTI.

I'm sure other readers can add to this list.

I don't have any issue with my quality of life and I get by great on less than a grand a month.

Years ago in a bar in Alaska I asked a woman if she wanted to dance, she said, "No, but maybe I could interest you in something else." Thick headed me said, "What?"

She said, "Do I have to hit you over the head with a rubber hammer?"

Oh.... Oh, I've learned a lot since my 20's, not all of it pretty.

A2Z Enterpises seems to have hit upon a great formula for making money at the expense of others: lie in order to get permits and public support, tout your enterprise as "good for the economy", get buddies at the Port to give you a key resource (water for the track) for free, trample on the rights of the public and your neighbors, and then laugh all the way to the bank.
Just the traditional business model that the PABA respects and endorses?

From some of the comments here, I gather that many in Port Angeles think it's okay to make money by doing the equivalent of stealing from the public: lying about the source of water for the track in order to get a permit to build it, and then getting a sweetheart deal from the Port to pump water out of a pond on Port property for free.
And, what's up with the Port giving away public assets? Gifting public property to a private enterprise is unconstitutional in Wsshington. Port officials should be called on the carpet for this.
This isn't about whether a Sprint Boat Track is good for Port Angeles, it is about public trust and accountability.
Promoters of the race track don't deserve being hailed as great entrepreneurs when their enterprise would be nothing more than empty trenches gouged into the land without resorting to taking property (valuable water) from the public.

The best defense is a good offense!

See, by being as offensive as possible, you can always be right, no matter what you think or say. And, if you really get nasty, everyone will KNOW you're right!

Of course we know that humans have no impacts on the environment. There is no climate change. Burning of fossil fuels is a good thing! Teach your children well.

Lets invade a few more oil producing countries under the flag of caring about "human rights". We need all the oil we can gain control over. Iraq and Libya are not enough. Lead by example.

And in Port Angeles, lets' be the center of all the oil burning activities we can think of. 100 acres of race tracks of every kind we can think of. Hell, lets drain those water tracks and fill them with oil, and light it up every weekend. Then we can have guys jump the flaming oil in v-12 powered sprint cars.

Why try? Why be concerned about the future? Burn it all now, as fast as we can. There's money to be made.

WTF? Sez: " I noticed you avoided that obvious point (as usual)..."
after: " Just went out and scored 2 tickets... I'll be having fun this weekend- you'll be whining and peeing your pants without a permit."

You might be a funny guy with how you keep doing the big "dodge" with your oh-so predictible avoid -the-topic-with-insults tactic, but the topic for our community remains too serious.

This reminds me of battles past. A few decades ago, the US was divided over "civil rights". The refrain in one song was: "Which side are you on, boy.. which side are you on?"

Wallace in '63 was saying "Segregation Forever!"

Sounds a lot like you these days. You say:" Better get outta here while you still can." Which side of the dogs are you on, boy?

Years ago, the powers-that-be kept us all from voting here in the US. Not so long ago. They had the "Love it, or leave it" chant.

As we said back then: "Don't you hinder me.."

Pretend you have the power. But you don't. You want to hold onto the way you controled us all, but you can't. You want your way of life to continue unchallenged. But we will challenge. You think your angery words and vicious dogs will back us down. They won't.

Just like in 1961. Just like in 2011.

What sacrifices are you making regarding your own use of fossil fuels that you feel you have the right to condemn others for theirs?(Ooooh the question you've been avoiding since the start) We're not talking about Mass Transit, or Fuel taxes, or anything that might address the issue, we're talking about a boat race. Oh and your over the top neo liberal reaction to it. Your historical analysis seems to end in 1961, leaving out (go figure) the backlash to your bitchy superiority that helped to sway independents to the conservative tent. The Conservatives have always been assholes. It is this Neo Liberal , I know better , I have no concept of scale , I will condemn all who don’t agree, I expect people to do as I say (unfair to ask what I DO) attitude that has crippled the Democratic party and alienated everyone but nuts like you. So stand in your empty room and scream “I’m right! I know what’s best”. I’ll be at the races.

Hehehe. As predictible as the sun rising, WTF? resorts to the nasty offensive. Sounding a bit like Jim Clark, there.

Your entire rant is exactly what you accuse me of! Over the top, "I know it all, I have it all figured out, and I'm so righteous I'm going to attack everything about you."

Since you asked, I drive a 20 year old 3 cylinder car that gets 60 mpg. I have solar panels that power my house. My PUD bill last month (excluding the $18 meter charges) was $1.83.

I won't go into all the rest of the details of my life, but suffice it to say, I take the health of the planet very seriously, and have taught my 3 children accordingly. It is their future.

In the 60s, people had a choice. Support segregation, or take active action to make chages they believed in. I doubt many freedom riders attended Klan rallies for entertainment.

Obviously, others did support the segregationists, and the injustices continued for years.

The US and other countries that have waged wars to gain control of oil supplies are little different, from my perspective. Most thinking people realize we are literally killing ourselves and others in the support of the oil economies.

As with the segregationists analogy, many in America were happy with the status quo, and did nothing to help change the obvious wrong. To change meant their way of life would have to change, so they didn't.

And so you go to the boat races this weekend, then the rock crawling events, and other fuel burning events Dan will dream up.

As we said back then "What side of the dogs are you on..?"

Let’s see now…if I attend this race, I have no regard for my grandchildren’s future. The promoters are liars and thieves. Deriving any economic benefit is akin to selling a daughter. Making these assertions in this language is apparently not offensive. In fact, it’s as lofty an aspiration as the Civil Rights Movement. I guess I’m on the side that can tell the difference between the enslavement and subjugation of an entire race and a boat race. (Although, I will admit both are “race issues”) I’m on the side that doesn’t see economic benefit from said race as equivalent to selling one’s daughter. The side I’m on can tell the difference between corruption and collusion and “grand theft – pond water”. My side remembers Dan Evans (a Liberal republican) and Scoop Jackson (a Conservative democrat) as the most effective and popular politicians the state has ever produced. Of course, all this “my side your side” bullshit from NeoLibs and NeoCons pretty much makes even the idea of those guys obsolete.

Yeah, I can see how you can construe things to look that way. The folks down south, in the early 60s did the same thing. Ignore the big picture, and instead try to frame things about "purity of race", and other rationalizations.

Climate change will most affect the majority of human population centers around the world, most of which are located in low lying areas most likely to be inundated by rising waters. Affecting billions. Few credibly dispute this.

And most thinking people know the burning of fossil fuels is the cause. How many millions of affected people count, WTF?, for you to care, and act? The beating to death of one "nigger" was okay, but when you killed a dozen, or hundred, then it was an outrage? Killing thousands in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya is okay, as long as you can go to the boat races burning their oil, because..?

You are dodging the issues with your defense of what you see as one singular event. RCP said: "In the 21st century activities like this that burn fossil fuels to see who can go around in a circle fastest will be banned.

Oh wait...I just looked at my calendar...who would have thought this would be going on now...:(

4:21 PM, September 11, 2011"

Yet you see fit to think promotion, participation and support of such obviously harmful activities is justified.

When, and who amoungst us will stand up, and say " enough is enough"? When will we acknowledge, as Americans, that each one of our 300 million actions add up to a country that is not working?

Hmmm… so RCP is the goat that’s constantly parodied and baited as some sort of Pollyanna suddenly becomes quotable and credible because in this case he agrees with your position. (Don’t get too comfortable Randall; they’ll turn that right around as soon as you disagree with them on something else) As far as quotes go, Dave in Sequim is pretty much right on, but because he posted in a concise and civil manner, (which doesn't support your point) he's ignored.

I think that rather than a valid analogy for a boat race in Port Angeles, the Civil Rights movement represents for you an example of the triumph of Liberal thought and action. (Which it is) But I think you're frustrated that you don’t have virulent racists to defeat or a Vietnam War to end like the Liberals of old. No Matter- there's a boat race out on Edgewood Drive - those guys are just as evil as racists and War Mongers...

I'm sure every African American would approve of your use of the word Nigger (because you used it for EFFECT) so that's OK. I mean if you didn’t directly take part in the movement, I’m sure you’ve read books about it, so just as good. Do you call conservatives (or boat race enthusiasts) Retards as well?

Now if I were talking about a gas tax to construct mass transit (which I support), or my disappointment with Mr. Obama for not including mileage and emission standards in his deal with the Auto Industry(which I am), or an excise tax based on displacement and fuel mileage, well then I’d be an OK guy. But if I attend this boat race, I’m the just as stupid and evil as the racists in the 60’s. You need to check yourself before you wreck yourself- This is the shit that wins elections for the Republicans.

8:23 AM, September 17, 2011
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Again, you dodge the issue, by raising others.

This isn't about Republicans or Democrats. This isn't about winning elections. This is about each of us, and our responsibilities for our actions and their repercussions.

But, as long as you've brought up it up, I'll venture my views. You say: "You need to check yourself before you wreck yourself- This is the shit that wins elections for the Republicans."

In case you haven't noticed, the current system and how it is being operated by those we've elected isn't working very well. Are you satisfied? You don't see them ALL as beholden to, and working for "special interests"? And, those "special interests" ain't us!

We all get distracted from what is really important by the media that tells us all how important national level political actions are. That THEY all are so important, and politics "Trickles down" to us peons from Washington. I would say it is the other way around, but we've been buffaloed to think otherwise.

Funny, those important people come to each of us for our votes, when it comes to election time. After that? Forget about contacting any of them!

What really is important is my community, each of our communities. We pay taxes to have our roads paved and maintained, our public employees paid adequately, and for all the other things we deem important to maintain the quality of life we desire.

And, this includes investing in research, development and implimentation of new technologies to improve our health, and the efficiencies of the systems we rely upon for our daily activities.

Instead, the current political system has become the military-industrial establishment Eisenhower warned us of, where executives from the military industries are appointed to the committees that appropriate tax money for weapons systems in a revolving door. The US has more people in jails than any other country on the planet. The US is the biggest dealer of weapons, in the world. The US wages war to gain control of resources in other countries. Etc, etc, etc.

And which Democrat has done ANYTHING substantive to change any of that, in recent memory? Or Republican?

Now, we see our country brought to its' knees by these policies. Millions driven from their homes.

We EACH are responsible for the government we elect. We are responsible for those that run, and the issues they run upon. We go along with, and validate the issues they campaign with, however contrived or irrelevant.

And so, back to the boat race. By attending, participating and defending fuel intensive events like this boat race, we give indication that we, as the public, don't really think pollution, climate change, etc are important issues politicians should take action on.

With our participation and support, we show those that want to continue with the oil economy that there is a constituency for those policies.

And, so you do. And the country bombs Libya for 6 months to gain control of its' oil.

With both Democrat and Republican support.

Wrong, NATO bombs the forces of a brutal, homicidal dictator in Libya. Besides, we are in Libya for the sand...2% of the worlds oil production is not worth our efforts. That is really good sand though!

WTF, I don't begrudge you or anyone the fun of watching the races. I saw one once on the Mississippi in front of my studio a couple years ago. Those were faster boats that exceeded 100mph. After the winner kissed the girls and the crowd had left, there was still a blue haze in the valley.
I do understand that racing has given us many refinements of the fossil fuel powered vehicles. But, now we have countless types of events from boats, snowmobiles, Monster Trucks to NASCAR and on and on that are held every week. It is a mind set that has had it's time and now is detrimental to the whole world.

As for the anonymous negatron trolls...don't worry about me. I have baited them and left them hanging so often they have air-sickenss. I may be a goat, but I am one in a herd of sheep...bhaaa...snort...mwahaha!

and:
"The Scramble for Access to Libya's Oil Wealth Begins -" NYTimes.com

So, foriegn countries have been funding, arming and actively bombing the established government, its' infrastructure and its' military in support of "rebels" that have such limited popular support they cannot do anything inside their own country without outside help. Even after more than six months of bombing from "NATO", the "rebels" cannot take and hold the small town of Bani Walid.
