U.S. Border Patrol: Coming to a Park Near You

Congress is actually considering a bill that would give the U.S. Border Patrol immediate access to all national parks and wilderness areas that are within 100 miles of the Canadian or Mexican border.  This "immediate access" includes building fences, building roads, setting up monitoring stations whatever it takes to sniff out illegal immigrants.

This bill is the National Security and Lands Protection Act, and it's already been approved by the House Committee on Natural Resources.

Building fences and building roads? Bullshit, they can get out of their SUV's and go hunt for them, get some exercise. Build roads and the illegals will use them.

Is there really that much of a problem with the Canadian border? Or are these idiots just looking to take over everything?

I say to cut back on their funding, they can go find some honest work. I swear, America is going insane.

It wasn't reported in the local media (at least not that I saw) but the Customs & Border Patrol "CBP" division of the Department of Homeland Security has prepared and published a draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement on activities to be conducted within a swath of land encompassing all of the 4000 mile-long border with Canada and 100 miles south of the border. That includes almost all of the Olympic Peninsula; all of Seattle; all of Spokane; it will impact nearly 6 million people in Washington State, alone.
The CBP is accepting public comments on the draft PEIS until October 31. Google "CBP Northern Border Project EIS Public Comment" and it should take you to the web site.
It looks like the BP has been planning for a long time to step-up its operations - with or without new legislation authorizing it.

Great. These guys get a blank check from the taxpayers to build a cushy new building and expand their presence tenfold. Now they want more taxpayer money to build roads through the parks, when our town can't fix the potholes in existing roads and our state can't even afford to keep the parks open for us!

Great, we can expect to be shot while backpacking now.

Failed Drug War threatens Olympic National Park-

Olympic National Park now designated as US/Canada border?

Even though the Olympic Peninsula may not warrant tactics used 1500 miles south of this location- central planning provides one size fits all solutions to perceived post-911 problems.

According to its statement of "core values" found in an introductory summary of its Northern Border Security Program, (PEIS, September 2011, page B-2):
"Vigilance is how the Customs & Border Patrol ensures the safety of all Americans. CBP demonstrates courage and valor in the protection of our Nation. CBP is dedicated to defending and upholding the Constitution of the United States. The American People have entrusted CBP to protect the homeland and defend liberty. We are America's front line."

Ay-yi-yi! Curses, senor Border Patrollero! Now you have found out that many of us have snuck across your border for the express purpose of hiding miles and miles in your forests bonita for no clear reason - other than that for so many years, that was the one place we knew there was no Border Patrolleros. (No jobs either, but...) Now, due to your cleverness, our secret is out! Curse you, Border Putalleros! Curse you all!!!

You should all take a look at the link provided by Public Comment. The Bp is contemplating road construction to speed up interdiction response, construction of what it calls forward operating bases, and the environmental and cultural impact of enhanced surveillance. The eis says the bp has already complated a scoping process during which it corresponded with over 1200 public agencies. So Clallam county, cities of PA and Sequim and forks must know something about this. Some freaky shit is being contemplated for olypen.

I wonder if they stop to think about the fact that a lot of the folks out there farting around are packing guns and don't like their peace and quite and rights disturbed.

Thats pretty funny, the BP thinks its going to negate a 100 years of environmental protection of national parks and wilderness areas and drive bulldozers from Vancouver BC to Duluth, Minn.

Really?

Never thought I'd say this but I'm going to start making donations to GreenPeace and Sierra Club.

Those moronic jack booted thugs can't control the southern border, they dont need to put thousands more square miles under martial law.

As I recall, we killed a bunch of Indians to take this country so we could have some peace and quite and rights.

Seven fist fights in Monkeyville this weekend, cuz we’re civilized, and all that crap.

Hum, too early for a beer and the street is quite so I can’t take pot shots at others to keep everyone alert.

Maybe I should make some protest signs with my new letter cutter.

If we had nukes there's a lot of things going on that we don't like that we would nuke.

Like our capitalists and government for starters. Then we could start over again and see if we could build something that works better than this bullshit.

"Me thinks that they have brainwashed us into having the government we deserve."

The US is the biggest weapons maker and biggest weapons seller in the world. The government is a revolving door of former industry leaders who now hold offices. Corporations spend many millions every year to "lobby" for things that will benefit them.

No wonder you hear the proposals for the increasing use of military systems in the US. No wonder you hear the campaign rhetoric of fear.

No money for social programs, but no lack of public/tax money for the Border Patrol to drive all over state, equipped with the best Lockheed Martin can produce.

Yeah, but I just want to be able to hike in the park without being molested by hoards of job hungry Mexicans. Just because there aren’t any is no reason not to spend millions of dollars destroying the integrity of our wilderness areas just to be sure…

Ya kidding? Billy, you know how hard it is to try and make any distance in those forests! It is HARD to walk very far in those woods.

But, imagine all the criminals that will take advantage of the roads the Border folks build!

"Build it, and they will come."
