Port Angeles Fine Arts Center Closing Temporarily

The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center will be closed for the first three weeks of 2012. They're facing a $40,000 shortfall. They're hoping the 3-week closure will give them time to focus on grant-writing and other means for balancing their budget.

The Fine Arts Center is owned by the City but is funded mostly through donations and a trust account.

Who cares about art? This is a logging town, and always has been.

And with that attitude, it always will be. Not a great idea when logging has declined to the point that there are no family-wage jobs in town.

People, let's move with the times, shall we? We need art, we need tourism, we need to make Port Angeles an attractive destination.

And above all, we need to keep a positive outlook and attitude.

Just saying.

I was a bit surprised to see the library extend its hours.

Every town on this rock wants to be a tourist town. Just how many tourists do you think there are?

Move with the times?? Are you awake? Paying attention to what is going on in the world? How about the article that starts this thread? Donations are down, the Fine Arts Center is closing for a few weeks to figure out how to get enough money to stay open. Shall we move with those times?

Tourism? Have you noticed one of our tourism related businesses, the Victoria Express, went OUT of business recently? That even with both of those ferries gone, the only remaining way to Victoria from the area can't fill half a boat? Shall we move with those times?

The Toys for Kids drives are reporting more need, and less donations. Pen Ply just closed.

Are these the times we should be moving with?

Just wondering.

Seniuk's arrogant, elitist attitude is a major part of the problem with the FAC.

Interesting to see that he's "retiring" in June. I wonder if that's his decision or whether he's been quietly told to get out?

In response to Dick Goodman's comments...

"Seniuk's arrogant, elitist attitude is a major part of the problem with the FAC."

Speaking as an outsider, someone who is new to the area, I have always, always found Jake to be warm and welcoming. He can be distracted due to overwork, but that is not arrogance, that's passion. Having a vision for this area as something more than an economically depressed logging town isn't arrogance, it's VISION.

"Interesting to see that he's "retiring" in June. I wonder if that's his decision or whether he's been quietly told to get out?"

Sigh...Yes, there's a conspiracy behind every story, isn't there? No, Jake isn't retiring because he's tired after 23 years of doing this. He's not retiring because it's time for him to focus on his own life, and not be spending 50+ hours a week at the PAFAC. He's not retiring because he's tired of the endless funding challenges he's dealt with. No, he's being forced out because...Because...Because..?

Because..?

Or, like seems to be the pattern in Port Angeles, ride the train until the money runs out.

Bob Stokes would make a great director of the PAFAC!

Yeah! Then the PAFAC could be filled with HIS stuff! There isn't enough of his stuff already all over town.
