Bringing the Kalakala to Port Angeles

Steve Rodrigues, owner of the Kalakala, wants to bring the ferry back to Port Angeles.

Between 1935 and 1967 the Kalakala was a passenger ferry between Seattle and Bremerton and Port Angeles and Victoria. In the Seattle Worlds Fair it was the second most popular attraction after the Space Needle.

Rodrigues wants to build a marina east of the Red Lion where he would harbor the Kalakala. This development would also include condos and apartments, retail space and a welcome center for tourists. The Kalakala would be a floating restaurant and center for special events.

Rodrigues has been trying to do this same thing in Tacoma for the past several years, but he hasn’t gotten any funding.

I think this would be great for Port Angeles, if only…

And in other local news, the K.O. Erickson Trust, owner of the Gottschalks building in downtown Port Angeles, has decided to sit back and wait for opportunity to come knocking.

The answer is simple...House the Kalakala inside the Gottschalks building.

Thanks for the nice work on this blog.

Oh Jeez, not again...When is he going to realize the best thing for this venerable old boat at this point is to work with Fisheries on a location to sink it and form an artificial reef and new fish habitat?

Put it on Laurel Street as the new home of the farmers market!

Ah, I was in the business association when he first brought that dream to town.

And I supported because it seemed like a good thing, until I realized that he didn't have the power and money to pull it off.

When he couldn't get anything going here he took it to Neah Bay and screwed them over.

Now it just becomes more of a piece shit each day and it seems that his wet dream won't end until it sinks somewhere.

Maybe they should have have shoved it in that hole where they built the gateway and stuck a clock on top of it.

It would have been a hell of a lot more interesting bus stop than what is there now.

Ah, hindsight.

I've seen a few other ferries converted to something useful. They're pretty cool. But that's in SeaTac area. This is Port Angeles and the Kalakala might be too far gone at this point, let alone when (if) he gets financing.

It was pretty much gutted out and served as a landlocked cannery in Kodiak Alaska for some years, it's just a shell now.

It sure would take a lot of lipstick to bring that pig back, ha ha ha.

Edna would read this blog? Oh come on, I'm sure that she thinks she is above us.

And it's not likely that any of us want to be on top of her, ha ha ha.

You'd be surprised who reads this blog and has a conniption when they see people really think of them!

I know of a few people in city government and down town merchants who have gone into apoplectic fits over comments people have made. Oh well, them's the breaks.

maybe if they didn't think so highly of themselves, and got that stick out of their rear they could enjoy the blog, the comments, and the reality that this town NEEDS to let its hair down, quit putting on airs, and get back down to earth. They could LEARN from it..instead of getting their" wittle feewings hurt"
The town.."culture" is one of insincerity, petty squabbling, and overwhelming insecurity. It acts like a very, very SMALL town, indeed. The people and attitudes MAKE a town...and, in this case, it's one of non-cooperation, ignorance, bull*hit "blowing smoke" congratulatory happy talk, and blindness (and/or lack of willingness) to put forth any effort for the good of the town. It's all "what's in it for me" and other incestuous co-conspiracy themes.

We do not work together -- because some want all the glory, some want all the money. HOWEVER, the majority of us would LIKE to live in an upbeat, fun, thriving community -- but our "pillars of society" are back-biting, arrogant, humourless, greedy so-and-so's. The key positions (promotion, city decisions, chambers/associations etc.) are filled by big egos in small shoes. They c*ckblock. Shake their heads and say "nooo, noooo...we can't do that. We tried that once. We don't want to do that". They play favourites, and worse, they outright snub anyone they deem "not in our club".

Its common in the Port Angeles culture to say NO before a question has been asked. Its also common to lie, lie lie. "Business is way up!" "The passport requirements hasn't hurt the passage to/from Victoria" "Downtown is awash with people" "it was an overwhelming success" "the art draws people to our down town" "Twilight fans will come here forever" "we all need to congratulate ourselves on a job well done"

----The Emperor has no clothing, and this blog, and the many posters, dare to SAY IT. ----

Get over yourselves! The criticism isn't to hurt your feelings, it's to wake you up. Please. Wake up! We are trying to HELP. Time to grow up and listen to the tough love.... in other words, MAN UP, grow up, and get over yourselves!

Once again we open our beloved Peninsula Daily News to read another article about "Candidate" Max Mania's shameful behavior at debate with Edna Petersen.

Has Mister Mania no shame? Is there no depth to which Mister Mania will not sink? No mud which Mister Mania will not wallow in?

This weaver of words, this upstart crow, this supposed "candidate" has once again cast aspersions upon Edna Petersen and then denied doing so. Prevarication is not a quality we seek in our City Council candidates Mister Mania, not do we approve of those who would seek the lower depths in order to win at all costs!

Mister Mania would have you believe that he is a leader in the Artististic Community of our dear town. He is not!

Bob Stokes is our Artistic Leader and Bob Stokes has endorsed Edna Petersen for City Council Position Number Two. Yes, Bob Stokes knows that with Edna gracing our City Council, we shall blossom forth and their common vision of Port Angeles as a darling little Artist's Colony shall prosper and thrive.

Mister Mania may be the candidate of a certain bitter, jealous element in town. There are always such petty people with their sharp tongues spreading gossip and slander. These sad little people may found their candidate, but it a candidacy of the gutter.

For the True Artist there is only one candidate who has the vision, the grace and that certain something every True Artist has, and that candidate is Edna Petersen!

I don't think that is going to happen based on my experience when I was in the business association.

The person in chair five doesn't mind if you pick on the person in chair seven, just don't go to chair five next.

And don't bother to send honest feelings to the local rag cuz he's on their side and will generally protect them by not printing them.

I have no idea if any of you are what are called tree huggers but he's not fond of them, it gets in the way of their capitalism, makes it more expensive for them.

So it's nice to have this forum here.

BTW, where do you suppose they shop and vacation at? That's right, other places, so they have to try to con others into coming here to drop some cash to get some money back into the community.

Of course they want to con you into paying for the things to draw them here through your taxes.

Ask Cherie Kidd where she went on her honeymoon for example. We all know that they didn't spend a few grand on it hanging out around here.

No reason for an important official to hang out around here for a vacation when there are more interesting places to go.

Other clocks to look at, ha ha ha.

yes...and to hear them go on about how wonderful Walmart is. Holy moly..it's ridiculous. Walmart destroys commerce in small towns...yet our smarties in public places push it, let the Wally group walk all over them, and act like it's something special.
Of course, the dummies in this town don't get it...that every dollar spent at Walmart only a few cents stay here..the rest. Meanwhile, they complain about how there is no where to shop around here. Look in the mirror you fools!
