Finalized Deal Between Rayonier and Ecology Dept.

The State Department of Ecology has signed a cleanup agreement with Rayonier Properties LLC.

The agreement outlines a three-year time line for cleaning up the 75 acres at the foot of Ennis Street and 1,325 acres of harbor sediment. Harbor-Works and the City of Port Angeles had both wanted a shorter time line.

Ah, yes.

Nice to see that the "leadership" and "stakeholders" in Port Angeles can get things done.

The NOAA bid? City and "leadership" whine and moan, beat their chests publicly state how THEY are going to protest and appeal the decisions. Results? Strike out.

The Rayonier clean up? 10 years and counting. Despite all of the meetings and defiant protests statments by "leadership", what comes of it all? Nothing.

Now we're going to have a $20,000 economic development "summit" with these same people.

Don't die holding your breath waiting for ANYTHING from these folks.

Say, the new heritage center is looking pretty good.

It seems to me that when the natives want to do something they just quietly go about getting it done without a lot of fancy meetings and babbling and endless committees like your so called city leaders and mover and shakers are always doing.

And I'll bet the natives get things done a lot cheaper. If you want something to happen in town maybe you should ask them to do it for you.

There's too much white trash in this town that's just full of bullshit. :-)

The summit costs are reported at $24,000, NOT $20,000.

So what should "leadership" and the "stakeholders" do? Sit back, try nothing, sarcastically critize everything that anybody else tries to do, like Anonymous here does? Why don't we all show up tonight at the public summit (Red Lion, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) and offer some suggestions? It can't hurt, and might just help.

I'm not dressing up to go to the Red Lion and that's what impresses those folks, it's not my style to put on a suit anymore.

I don't have any valid ideas for this town anyway, other than moving to where the jobs are. I think it's just going to be stagnate here for some time.

Wait, I do have one idea, this town needs a theme, other than being the gateway to the hookers and sights in Victoria.

I would suggest a Native American theme based on all their long history here. Even adopt their architecture, it looks a lot better than most of the stuff the white trash tosses up here, ha ha ha.

I'm sure some of the white trash won't like my idea, at least unless they can figure out how to make great money off of it.

I can hear the gears starting to grind in their pointy little heads already. :-)

But the natives got the jump on you, they build casinos to take your money, damn injun's are smarter that we think sometimes, ha ha ha ha

I think it IS important to evaluate the track record of those that are portraying themselves as "leadership". After years of producing NOTHING but jobs for themselves, you'll have to excuse me if I'm not overly eager to waste my time putting faith and efforts in their demonstrably bad track record.

Maybe you think it is a good idea to support fools and incompetants who have shown you over and over they can do NOTHING. Go for it, and enjoy!

How about this? They go somewhere else to lead others. This town did just fine for many years before the 'brains' started coming here looking for good size paychecks.

It wasn't growing a lot but that's beside the point, I have no desire to see this place become Seattle West just because they got tired of the big city also.

They come here because a small town appeals to them and then they can't turn their damn brains off. Not to mention their greed for money.

You are trying to say that these great ideas have been floating about, out there, but for the lack of the organization of this $24,000 "summit", these wonderful people have been keeping these wonderful ideas to themselves??

Really? You really believe this??

I’m going to tell you folks something based on my many years as a manager and business owner, it’s a cold hard fact of life and like it or not, nothing is going to change it.

Government created jobs (that you have to support) beside the point, nothing happens anywhere unless someone in the private sector sees a need somewhere and is willing to invest the time and energy and money into making it happen. And as often as not they bypass all the endless meetings bullshit of ‘the self important folks’ and just do it.

No business that wants to start up here has to put up with the endless meetings of the PABA, the Chamber of Commerce, or the various economic development agencies popping up these days and put with their input cuz they think they are so smart. They just keep things as simple as they can and do what is required to get the business going.

If these folks that are drawing good paychecks at public expense are so damn smart I challenge them to put their money where their mouths are and build their own businesses here. Or just shut up. If I decided to start a business here I’m damn if I would put up with them.

Build it and they will come makes for a nice movie but the theory itself is bullshit.

You're right, Billy.

It is just silly to think that a year ago, two years ago, or five years ago people in Port Angeles were not trying to come up with ideas to create jobs in Port Angeles. They were, and I remember hearing of similar economic development meetings. And after all those meetings, here we are doing it again.

"Maybe Rauch, Harmon, Edson and Renshaw will rub off on a few of the public sector folks."

Harmon? Last time I talked to Jack, he was so pissed off with Port Angeles, all he could talk about was moving his businesses out of the area. He was talking about moving to Port Townsend. As we saw recently, he just sold one of his two ferries.

Yeah, maybe his actions WILL rub off, and these so-called leaders will move away, too.

I've always thought that if anything happens in this town, it will be in spite of government and not because of it.

I'm not anti-government though. There are things government does very well... infrastructure is a great example, like the roads that are being neglected in favor of these economic summits. Government can develop an atmosphere that fosters growth, but our local government never really seems to. Too busy spending money on incubators and feel-good sessions.

But business is going to have to come from businesses. You can't wish or talk businesses into existence. If a business doesn't think they can make it in a given location, for whatever reason, they won't try.

Now I'm wondering what he is pissed off about, because the economy soured? He seems to me like the type of man that would just accept and deal with it and do what he needed to do, downsize or whatever.

Like Murry Motors did, they accepted the inevitable and downsized to weather the storm, so to speak.

Endless meetings won't improve things and why are governments so obsessed with creating new businesses? Even Obama seems to be.

If you expect your governments to create new businesses and they get heavy into that in twenty years everyone will be screaming about socialism, or some form of it.

Support systems (and safety) should be government controlled, everything else should be left up to the public business sector.

But if the need or a reasonable profit isn't there it just has to be accepted and dealt with.

According to how I see things as I follow things, most jobs are going to be created in large cities during the next twenty years and more folks will be moving to them.

Doesn't make much sense to me but I guess ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I sure hope they learn how to get along better in them.

Anyway, I expect PA to lose some economy, and thus, population, that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Deal with it, us folks that like small quite places are okay with it all. Now, where should I go camping next?

If you follow this link to the latest information from the state, you will see that of the 22,679 total jobs in all of Clallam County, 6,861 of them are "government" jobs, paying annual wages of $290,626,270, almost 3 times more than the next closest industry category, Wholesale/Retail Trade. Like it or not, we, the private businesses in Clallam County need these consumers to sustain our own livelyhoods. I read somewhere that the total tax "take", in Clallam County, from all government sources was less than $190,000,000. If true, that means that "government" in Clallam County, provides $100,600,000 more, in wages alone, than it takes out of the community. Maybe we shouldn't be so quick to disparage the economic development efforts of local government around here.

Of course, it wasn't Ecology that created all the pollution at that site, it was Rayonier. Rayonier COULD have been more pro-active about getting the property cleaned up, if they wanted to, but it has been Rayonier that has been causing the delays, not Ecology. Ecology does not own the property, Rayonier does. It is Rayonier that has not completed the studies they had previously agreed to.

And, if you lived in Gales Addition when Rayonier was operating that plant, you'll remember what the stuff coming out of their smokestack did to the paint on your car! But, Rayonier was okay with subjecting people to that stuff.

They weren't in any hurry to clean up their emmissions back then, any more than they are in cleaning up the mess they left.

"Maybe we shouldn't be so quick to disparage the economic development efforts of local government around here."

I appreciate and commend you for the research you have done on this, but you're not including an important aspect to these figures. None of what you cite are new factors in the regional economic picture. The ratio of "government -to- private" employers has not changed by much in quite a few years. Yet, within those same years, the economy of Port Angeles HAS changed fairly dramatically.

Given that reality, here we are, back to yesterdays' "economic summit". Besides the fact the virtually EVERY city/community in North America is looking to attract business/industry/jobs to THEIR community, WHAT EXACTLY does Port Angeles have to offer that all these other competing communities don't have?

What sets Port Angeles apart from Tacoma, Bremerton, Olympia, etc. that will get a new industry to invest in Port Angeles, instead of those communities?

More potential employees? Better infrastructure? Better transportation for needed goods and services?

"Rah-rah" rants sound so nice and rally the locals but, as the years pass by, we don't see the businesses and industries falling for the rhetoric. The buildings still stand empty as the new businesses locate in nearby Sequim.

Wonder why?

Jesus was a man, a human, who was a good "spokesperson" for a new brand of religion that some guys came up with -- to justify stealing land (Crusades!), destroying some enemies (anyone they deemed so). The bible is a whole big thick sales brochure written by dozens and dozens of people for the sole purpose of trying to justify their evil acts.
Meanwhile, if you've ever READ the bible, which I doubt (you might know passages, but you haven't read the whole thing) you'd see that it is a mass of contradictions. Why is it none of the bible thumpers and Jesus pushers ever want to talk about the Deuteronomy (Mosiac law, which is old, old testament -- Moses and such, mostly or entirely ripped off from the fifth work of the Hebrew Bible). If you follow that and Leviticus you wouldn't eat shellfish and you would stone your children, women would only speak when spoken to, and so on. But, our current crop of brain-dead followers only use the passages that they WANT to use, and make the rest up with interpretation.
It's a sales vehicle, its purpose is to control people, and make them feel "good" about their spoon feed choices. It is, make no mistake, just like drinking Diet Pepsi, eating at MacDonald's or pretending we are really a "FREE COUNTRY". The little sound bytes like how Jesus is this or that....is just as meaningless as any other advertising jingle.
Really, really stupid people quote bible passages like parrots.

Hey! Jesus pusher....
The CRUSADES were a Christian war.
The Crusades were a series of religiously sanctioned military campaigns waged by much of Latin Christian Europe, particularly the Franks of France and the Holy Roman Empire. The specific crusades to restore Christian control of the Holy Land were fought over a period of nearly 200 years, between 1095 and 1291. Other campaigns in Spain and Eastern Europe continued into the 15th century. (wiki article, go read it)

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is quoted as saying that he had come to bring the sword, to "set father against son and mother against daughter" (Luke 12:53) and called on his followers to "But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me" (Luke 19:27).

These words have, in the history of Christianity, been enacted in bloody reality many times - starting when an important political rebellion against the Roman Catholic Church took on a religious slant - leading to the split in European Christendom between Catholic and Protestant. This split sparked off a series of religious wars which were ultimately to be responsible for the death of nearly a third of the entire White race.
Try googling "christian wars" you moron, there are hundreds and hundreds of examples of Christian incited wars...and the bible even pushes the concept.
Education! Your mind is a terrible thing to waste. Try reading, instead of listening to some uneducated pastor. Don't be a nimwit. God never meant for us to not use our brains....but those pushing a Christian agenda encourage stupidity.

Bejezus! Ever hear of "onward christian soldier" What do you THINK that means?
Most wars have been fought in the name of Christ. Meanwhile, Hitler was a huge fan of spouting bible-talk.
http://www.nobeliefs.com/Hitler1.htm

The German words, "Gott Mit Uns" means God With Us and appeared on many Nazi soldiers belt buckles during WWII.

Hitler was not only a confessed Christian, but his intolerance and atrocities were consistent with Biblical scripture and he acted as other Christians of the past and present.

....And, he encouraged his Nazi youth groups to spout Christian quotes whenever possible.

So, my question to you: how do you feel about Jews?

10:58 AM, April 09, 2010
Anonymous Anonymous said...

why is it that "christian" has come to mean "stupid".
From what I see, a whole generation has stopped thinking for themselves, and are looking for easy answers and ready replies.
It is the work of the devil!
Only stupid, uneducated people who lack their own gauge of morality (not fed to them by some so-called "religious leader") can do the right thing. I wouldn't doubt that any of these knock-kneed church followers would hesitate to nail someone to the cross because the person was offering some new ideas.
And, the other poster is correct, Hitler DID use Christian Theology to support his murderous plans, and the Holocaust. Be wary of those who quote the bible -- and ask you to follow them blindly.
