Clallam County Might Increase Enforcement Against “Junky” Properties

During the next few weeks, the three County Commissioners will be examining whether the county needs more enforcement power against code violations.

Doug Jensen, chief civil deputy prosecuting attorney, has proposed creating a Nuisance Abatement Committee that would prioritize enforcement against “nuisance properties.” A nuisance property could be one that pollutes the water table, poses a fire hazard, violates a building code, etc.

There won’t be a final decision by the County Commissioners until after a public hearing has been held.

Yeah, I spotted that also. My place was built during the great depression, of course it is a fire hazard and violates building code.

Actually, anything made of wood is a fire hazard, are they going to move all of us out onto the streets to protect us?

I'm old and I'm okay with my simple place, I'm well aware that when I'm done with this place that it will (rightfully so) be bulldozed down and hauled off to the landfill.

Until then they had damn well better leave me alone, then they can do whatever they like with it.

It's free and clear property, if they want the frigging title to it they can have it when I die, I damn sure won't need it anymore, I'm just finishing up my days here.

There is a lot of crap here, and to some it is an eye sore, but no nasty stuff that is harmful to the soil and others so I say to any officials that may read this.

Shove it, Daffney, my neighbors are okay with me and we get along good so mind your own &%$#@*! business.

If any of you had any brains you would design towns so that sections of them allowed for junk collectors because they are goldmines of useful things at times.

Especially during hard times. If you want pretty ville that's fine with me, but it doesn't mean that I want to live on your side of town.

I don't tell you how to live, don't you fucking tell me how to live. Now get your asses over to the courthouse and pay your property taxes for your pretty places.

Idiots.....

Harper, the last five years I worked before getting fed up and retired early taught me one thing.

These people that want everything pretty are not happy people. They are just people with more money than brains and they want us to join them because misery loves company.

I got so tired of trying to make these idiots with too much money happy that I just got fed up and retired early.

It just pissed me off to remodel an area of someones place only to have them call me back a few weeks later to change it all because they decided they decided they didn't like it after all.

Since gutting out my place and redoing it I haven't even painted the walls. The old lady next door has lived in her simple home since 1946 and the kitchen hasn't been painted since 1966 and she still heats the place with an old wood burning kitchen stove that may be older than I am.

This old lady is the happiest and most well adjusted woman I know.

HELLO !!!!!!

This needs to be done! I know of a home that is a terrible hazard, yet no one in the City will lift one single finger to do anything about it, despite neighbors complaints.

If a home is a hazard maybe something should be done about it. There is one across the street that should be burnt down.

I replaced all the wiring when I gutted my place out and redid it, and reinforced the roof so I consider it safe enough, except in the event of an earthquake but we're all going to be on the same boat, there isn't much here that is quake proof.

Maybe I should will it to the county with the stipulation that it be cleared and turned into a green space for at least a hundred years so the money mongers can't ring their hands at meetings trying to figure out how to make some money off of it.

I'll ponder on that some.

Should be good for some amusement, it's been kind of boring around here. Knock yourself out.

Tom - any chance of an ordinance on this blog for clearing off "junky posts"?

Me thinks BBC is more of the problem than the solution.

Harper understands me, you lower thinkers don't. And you have no idea if I'm a problem when you don't personally know me or what my place is like. It's a lot safer than a lot of places in this area.

And even if it wasn't, it's not really anyone else's business to protect me. Those of you that want big brother telling you how to live can stay on that side of town will big brother. :-)

The people who want this kind of enforcement are the most miserable, meddling, morons on earth.
My neighbor with the manicured lawn really needs a psychiatrist. Unresolved grief, unresolved anger, issues of persecution and desires to run everyone's life into the ground all contribute to the "there ought to be a law" mentality. But, it's right in keeping with the Homeland Security, and the "Health Reform" and everything else that is current America.
It's a dumb idea, but the neurotic amongst us have a lot of energy and hatred for their fellow man.

The whole downtown is a fire hazard and waiting to go up in flames. No fire suppression, open basements that connect, old wood timber construction. So, who's to judge what is a fire hazard and what isn't?
I say make the county and city pay attention to the infrastructure of the town and leave people alone. One man's trash is another man's treasure, who in the hell are you, or they, to decide which is which.
We have entirely too much government, as it is. Make them stop before we are all saluting and goosestepping.

"One man's trash is another man's treasure..."

The problem with that sort of selfish, immature thinking is this...Your big heap of "treasure" piled up in your yard affects MY property values, and my quality of life. It can also attract and harbor vermin, which will then spill over into my property. And, yes, it could be a fire hazard as well.

If you are really so sociopathic as to not care AT ALL what sort of impact your actions might be having on your neighbors and fellow citizens, then go live on a tiny little island by yourself. For those of us who choose to live in a civilized society, we welcome increasing the options available to deal with blight, hazards and hellholes near us.

I would hope that the county makes pretty rigid guidelines on what they consider "junky property". Piles of garbage, a health hazard, that's one thing. But if the law is so vague, it could cover an unpainted fence if the neighbors were the type to grumble, or a house out near Sequim painted an odd shade of purple.

I'm saying this mostly because I've overheard a few upper-type critters talking about this and it sounded like they didn't want to "clean up" so much as gentrify. Seriously, like some grandma in Gales Addition is going to have the money to make her house look like something out of California.

If all they're trying to do is clean up garbage, then make sure they spell that out. If they leave it deliberately vague I'd worry. If they really want to gentrify Port Angeles and Clallam Co., get the damn economy rolling again and let people fix up their own damn houses.

Fresh,
All the well maintained yards in the town couldn't make up for property values in this town!
As for the reality...all the crap LBR homes that have been built in the nicer neighborhoods, the mobile homes built in stick-built neighborhoods, and the total lack of real zoning has done more to lower your property values than any heap o'trash.
This is yet another ploy to fine us and make it an income source for the county...don't get too hot and excited.

Right, so this won't "make up" for the property values in town, so why try? Why try ANYTHING? In fact, if it's so awful here - why stay? Get off this blog and start your packing...
