Helpful Information for PDN Letter-Writer

In today's PDN, a letter to the editor complained that the PDN's Commentary page was unbalanced; biased toward the Left.

The writer specifically mentioned columns by Paul Krugman and Gail Collins. The good news for this person is: the conservative writings of both Michelle Malkin and Cal Thomas are featured every week in the PDN. In the irony department, Cal Thomas' column appeared today, right above the letter complaining about the PDN's leftwing bias.

In addition, there are several well-known local ultra-conservative residents whose letters are constantly appearing in the letters-to-the-editor section.

I hope this helps.

I can't speak for the entire PDN, but, from my experience, the letters to the editor generally have to go through Paul Gottlieb to be published - and that can be a long, strange trip. He clearly hassles some people a LOT over their letters (I've been one), asking for proof of this, or expounding at great length on how the PDN never publishes that. But other crackpot letters seem to sail through, no questions asked. Now, I'm not inside Mr. Gottlieb's head (THANK YOU, JESUS!!!) and can't vouch for his ideology, if any. But I can say he's close to Karen Rogers, and apparently views Glenn Cutler as some sort of father figure.

In other words: YIKES!!!

What you fail to understand is that the complainer's complaint had the ring of "truthiness" about it.

That's all that matters.

The newspaper is a second rate, quirky one. I could care less about letters to the editor. I avoid reading ANYTHING that Gottleib writes, and cannot even being to tolerate what Diane yada yada de la yada yada writes. (In fact, her articles give me a headache because I can't make heads nor tails out of what she is trying to get across.)
The newspaper is too insecure, too unaware, and there is no integrity. The fact that comments are there -- but then taken down routinely -- is troublesome. The fact that no one fact checks anything is often amusing. The thing is a joke, although, not as funny as one would like.
It is a great example why big tree media is going dead. There are only incompetent people running the thing, and no one really CARES about news.

Oh, don't get me going about trying to express YOUR OPINION via the PDN.

Like the other posters say, Paul Gottlieb challenges anything HE wants that is submitted, and doesn't stop until the letter is re-written to suit his views. It is pathetic.

And, as has been stated above, somehow the crackpot conservative writers are not required to provide proof of their wild accusations.

Having been involved in a variety of local issues over the years, and having been interviewed by PDN reporters, I know without a shred of doubt that the PDN intentionally skews articles to present specific views. No doubt about it.

I don't subscribe to the piece of crap, because I know I cannot trust what I read in it to be remotely accurate.

There seems to be a lot of disdain for the PDN. But the local media outlet that is much worse in terms of biased content is KONP. Citizens deserve a better alternative to AM 1450.

It's too bad that in the 60's there were TWO newspapers in town, and more than one crummy radio station.
If we have come "so far" why is it that we can't even report the news in our community, and the only radio is conservative packaged crap?

Ummm.. because the powers that be want to control what you think, and how you might react?

Otherwise, they would just let the truth flow, and let things sort themselves out, naturally. You know, like, in a democracy.

Have some gratitude people!

I like Paul Gottleib and IMO the PDN does a decent job of local news, and they balance the liberal/conservative opinion pieces. I like to read the uber-rightwing crazy people's letters to the editor cause they just show the whole community how ridiculous their opinions are, they don't think for themselves, they don't consider the facts, they simply channel Rush L and Glenn B and News-Free Fox.
And most importantly, Diane Urbani de la Paz is the best and hardest working writer they ever had down there!!!! Her writing has color, her topics are interesting and her coverage has depth. She is prolific and I just love to read her stories!
The PDN has no budget, medieval working conditions and antique equipment. And a lot of very nice local people work there. I support them and I will continue to subscribe!

What I want to know is when is the college going to announce to the public that nearly 20 people got laid off last week????????? We are talking entire departments, GONE.

Just My Opinion must work at the PDN. He and all the other servile and obsequious worker ants all love Diane Donk the Paz. Her text needs a good edit, and she needs to not think she is so damn cute with her phrasing. She's a second rate journalist, and a fifth rate writer.
Perfectly AWFUL.
Thanks for the PDN ass-kiss session, JMO

I read plenty of letters by nutty WTC conspiracy theorists in the PDN. The letters are amusing in their misguided, delusional leftist "blame America first" nonsense.

Arab terrorists, working for and under orders from Osama Bin Laden hijacked airplanes full of innocent Americans and flew them into the WTC buildings and the Pentagon.

So tell me, genius, why did they pick the WTC? Seems like a sports stadium would have killed more Americans, if that were their intent. Liar Bush told us that it’s because they hate “freedom”. Events throughout the Arab/Muslim world, from Egypt to Libya, to Tunisia would indicate otherwise. So tell us, why the WTC?

"The letters are amusing in their misguided, delusional leftist "blame America first" nonsense."

Not like Glen B, Rushme, News-Free Fox and the right-wing crackpots don't engage in conspiracy ponderings! "Birthers" come to mind.

As long as we're going to veer off into Big Picture topics, it is interesting to watch what is happening with Libya.

The West has long been opposed to Libya's leader Quadafi, and is being quick to support his opponents. But unlike what happened in Egypt, where the protests were peaceful, and opponents un-armed, in Libya, the opponents are armed.

Yesterdays' news spoke of the opponents to the government even setting up anti-aircraft guns.

So, the UN, with most of the western countries represented, is speaking out against the violence the Libyan government is perpetrating upon it's citizens.

It makes me wonder how any of these countries, including the US government, would react if armed protesters started taking over parts of towns and cities?

What would happen, if these armed protesters set up anti-aircraft weapons, and fired upon "security forces", whether they be the National Guard, or local police?

Do you think the US (or any of these other governments) would sit back, and encourage it? Do you think these governments would be so vocally supporting these types of challenges to their own leadership?

Just wondering. Seems a bit strange.

Today's lead story in the PDN:

GOP will take over in 2012, state attorney general tells Jefferson Republicans

Who cares? Seriously. Blah blah blah blah. Boring. THIS IS the reason I won't buy it, and the website is only on my radar once or twice a week. Non story, and boring, at that.
Charlie Bermant is, hands down, the BEST WRITER the paper has ever had, but, this article is hardly a lead story, and certainly, not interesting for a Sunday newspaper.
Are all the editors at the PDN a bunch of idiots?

Diane Urbani de la PEST is the worst writer, and sexist!
Her story about a woman who works in roofing begins: For Donna Cox, scampering up to and around the steep pitches of a two- or three-story house is no big deal.

Scampering? You must be kidding!! Who thinks this is cute? It's degrading and making fun of a woman doing a job that is usually dominated by men. But, so what? Even the subject of the story seems to be uncomfortable with the focus.
But the main thing, PDN, it's not NEWS and it's not human interest. It's bullsh*t with all capital letters. Urbani needs to GO. She is so annoying, I canceled my subscription to the paper. Racist, sexist, and silly.
Hey, PDN apologist....read this post to your pals.

Liar Bush is guilty of many crimes, but 911 wasn’t one of them. I asked you why the A-Rabs picked the WTC. Since you only half pay attention to any post but your own, you of course, missed the point.
And speaking of pesky facts, look up Libya’s projected oil reserves. Then go take your medication.

Well alrighty, then. Enough time spent on “el Stupido”… Back to the topic. I asked this before, but are these guys biased, or just stupid? Most of the writers apparently have a High School thesaurus on their desk, but seem to have misplaced their copy of “The Elements of Style.” La Paz and company seem to simply grab words because they like the sound of ‘em, with little regard for nuance or meaning. Maybe “scamper” felt better to Diane than “climb”. Since there is no discernable editing going on, I think most of this crazy crap goes to print as written. I have spoken to Gottlieb on the phone regarding letters and haven’t felt as though he was trying to direct or change my opinion. I have felt, however, like I was talking to someone suffering from Asperger’s Syndrome. As with the dismal retail situation in Port Angeles, I think the biggest problem with the PDN, KONP, etc. has to do with a lack of competition.

Not being a moronic tea bagger, I don’t worry so much about LIB or CON as it pertains to The Peninsula Woman section of the paper.(Jeeze, what a dope!) I do take issue; however, with some dip stick recently retired has been or never was being featured, as opposed to women who actually are from the area. Growing up here, I was always impressed by the quality and number of independent, self-actualized females the region produces. Though to look at PW you would think all they’re interested in is cheesy advice columns and marriage announcements.

Hey WTF, glad you didn't feel you were being forced to change your views when talking with Gottlieb. Not sure why that happened.

I sure know most of the letters I've submitted over the years have been extensively "modified" as a result of his direction, "or else". The "or else" is it won't get printed. I know of others who have told of the same experience.

Some tell me "What can you do? It's the only game in town". I stopped submitting anything to them.

No kidding! What a wack-job! It looks like she cares about the community she lives in, and the future of that community, and our children's future.

What a loon! Yes, she must be a "nazi".

(BTW, you know what "Nazi" actually stood for? "Nationalist", in German. You know, as in believing in your country.)

Let's trash any one who cares about our country's future. That make a lot of sense.

Actually, Ed, "Nazi" is an anacronym (WTF will certainly correct me if I'm using the wrong term) for "National Socialist German Workers Party". Yes, I've translated it into English, not rendered it in German (I'm sure WTF will scathingly point out my error).

Diane Sommerville is part of the "Mania" crowd - you know, the "preserve the historic waterfront", "the Gateway Transit Center is evil", "Edna kicked the Farmers Market out of downtown (and she's evil)", "close down all evil industry" crowd.

Now I'm not going to imply that Diane, Ed and "Mania" are all card carrying members of the NSDAP, but they are all Socialists and they want their Socialist agenda implemented on a National level.

Don't forget the $40 million dollar sewage overflow scams! How much of that project is actual pipes and pumps, and how much is engineering, planning, consultants etc?

I saw in one city staff presentation they want to spend over $2 million to make that tank they bought on the Rayonier property work. After buying the tank and 12 acres for about $1 million.

I'm all for stopping the pollution, but this project is yet another like all the others, envisioned by the same crowd, and being pushed by one of the only throw backs remaining from the old administration.

Not that you will get that from the PDN!
