Proposed Moratorium on Biomass Energy

City Councilman Max Mania has proposed a moratorium on Nippon's biomass project until we have a better understanding of the potential health hazards.  Mayor Cherie Kidd said she will talk to City Manager Kent Myers about adding this proposal to a future agenda for discussion.

this is a good thing. Like MOST things in Port Angeles, no one ever says "hey wait a minute, are you sure we really looked at this". The willingness to just approve anything by our city council is how we ended up with the Gateway fiasco, among other bad ideas. I'd like a moratorium on the concept of routing trucks up Race and out Laurdison. Its all residential, and goes past the Library, schools, and will be a disaster. Maybe the city council should think about getting rid of a certain manager at the city who never seems to care what people want -- he does it the old military way. Not to mention why the same tired old contractors and designers keep getting the contracts.

I agree with everything the first poster said in a big way. Especially the new truck friendly bridge at Race and Lauridson. That is for the benefit of a ONE grocery store, one design firm, and one construction firm. This is a messed up town. The fact that such a "conservative" town would pass TWO tax increases, right after the economy collapsed, and the the same people want to gut every social program that exists - except of course our two pedophile magnets - the pool and library. And this procession of southern BACKWATER has-beens being brought to town and dreaming of golf courses, outlet malls, and education "by the business model" - the Peter Principle in action. Makes me sick.

This IS a good thing. Lately, long term thinking has been nearly non-existent. People say the biomass program will create jobs (not a lot, not long-term) so that makes it a smart move for P.A. What is overlooked is the long-term effect of particulates on water and land. We need clean air and clean water more than anything else, not to mention the havoc that would be wreaked on the wildlife. We need to wake up and look at all sides of an issue.

Thanks, Max, for having the guts to say let's not go off half-cocked.

Just turn out the lights and close all the stores and we won't need any electricity, otherwise it has to come from somewhere.

And being as I've lived around those things all my life and I'm still kicking they've done a piss poor job of killing me.

I didn't go to Tuesdays' Council meeting, as they sure have convinced me they have NO interest in listening to their constituents, or representing the public's will. They (except Mania) have convinced themselves they know better than anyone else, except "staff". They just do what staff tells them to do.

Why has tide power not been looked into here? A facility across Ediz Hook, below the shipping lanes? Instead, we get Nippon: Japanese "bio-mass".

Years ago, the City Council had a proposal to plant trees along the roads leading into Port Angeles. The Council nixed the idea of beautifying the town because they realized they would have to pay someone to pick up the fallen leaves during the Fall months. They didn't think through to understand that the beautification of the city would increase property values, thus raising more than enough money to pay for more hours of the city street sweeper.

The council majority that supports the "bio-mass" project looked only at the short term. limited benefits in a few jobs, but did not consider how the smokestacks and impacts of the bio-mass facility will hold down area property values. Less tax money for the city.

Once again, the city takes a short term, stupid approach. As it always has. Why Port Angeles never moves ahead.

At least one cop on the scene and they don't know the make of the car? Toyota or Mazda? Sure it wasn't a Nissan? Pitiful.

Tide power is an interesting suggestion, will you fund it for us?

There are far too many sweetheart deals between the City and Nippon Industries. This is just the latest example of the City trampling on the rights and the health of the public in order to serve the interests of this giant global corporation.
Example: Nippon is excused from paying a monthly base rate on its electric bills; Nippon gets to have its very own perpetually dedicated seat on the City's Utility Advisory Committee; etc. etc.
Max is right to raise the concerns of his constituents. There are many more people concerned about the bad impacts of Nippon's project who are afraid to speak out about it in public; but they vote.

Do you know how many millions of taxpayers' money is going into the Nippon project? I would rather those millions go into a project that will be pollution free.

Who funded the Snohomish PUD tide power project?

I have no idea, so why don't you tell us.

Frankly, I don't think any of our money should go into it.

Good times, dude, good times!

As the city manager is well aware, Max is one of HIS bosses. The city manager can't stop any City Council member from doing what they want, or saying what they want. He serves at their pleasure.

Sorry you don't seem to understand that, "good times, dude."

" The city manager can't stop any City Council member from doing what they want, or saying what they want."

So, you admit "Max" made those posts? And you think it's OK for a City Council member to talk smack about their fellow Council members and heads of City Departments and candidates for City Council ... under an alias?

If "Max" wanted to trash talk folks and report inside info from meetings he should man up and post under his own name. Otherwise he's simply a spineless jellyfish.

I'm sure Don Perry and Pat Downie enjoyed being on the receiving end of some choice "Mania" witticisms, while the Dear Leader chortled in mirth behind his alias. That goes for Karen Rogers, Larry Williams and Glenn Cutler, too.

Heh, heh. Yeah, good times, dude.

Well, next year is an election year and we can get rid of "Max" and the shadow city council that pull his strings. Personally, I can't wait!

Who loves ya? =P

How can someone "admit" that someone else did something when they don't know who did it? Your logic is, well, lacking.

"And you think it's OK for a City Council member to talk smack about their fellow Council members and heads of City Departments and candidates for City Council ... under an alias?"

Why not? I'm sure that other City Council members "talk smack" about Mania among themselves. And doubtless Karen Rogers and Edna do too.

"...he should man up and post under his own name. Otherwise he's simply a spineless jellyfish."

Kind of like YOU are, oh anonymous one? Or are spines only required for those you envy?

"Well, next year is an election year and we can get rid of "Max" and the shadow city council that pull his strings."

"Shadow city council"? Not a little paranoid, are you? I know - and believe me, this one I DO know - it galls you to realize that Mania actually thinks for himself. You'd like it if he was some sort of puppet, but the reality is, he's not afraid to think for himself, and to speak up for the people of Port Angeles. And I know everyone I talk to appreciates that, even if they don't necessarily agree with him. So I'll make a prediction right here: If Mania runs for re-election, he'll get 60%+ of the vote. In other words, he'll win in a landslide.

Good times, dude! FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!

So the tsunami trash is coming, and the PDN "polls" us on how uninformed we are, or, really, how "worried" we have been made.

A better poll, for the locals, would be, "My impression of the tsunami debris is":

a) The government is lying, there was no earthquake and tsunami - that was all Obama's attempt to drive up gas prices

b) The US government caused the earthquake so we should clean up the mess

c) The government is lying and there isn't that much trash - and if there is trash, it's from Atlantis

d) I'm an elitist who believes in the scientific method and I am wrong about how much trash exists and if it really does exist, which is probably not the case anyway, those jobs created cleaning it up are not real jobs as the government created them.

If Cherie Kidd and Brad Collins can get re-elected with over 60% of the vote it should be no problem for Max Mania to do the same. We would all benefit from having another four years of Max Mania representing the people of Port Angeles. Not the connected few, the actual people.

A PDN "poll" might be: "What are your plans when Port Angeles gets hit by a similar earthquake and tsunami, as experts predict will happen"?

Answer will be "Hunh?"

Face it, old, tired former Port Angeles insiders. The majority of voters got fed up with you some years ago. Max will be reelected by a landslide, and others like him who are intelligent and forward-thinking will be elected to become a majority on the City Council. I hope that when that happens that it won't be too late to save the community from the downward spiral emanating from the bad old days.
Of course, a big impediment to progress will still be the Port Commission. Those are tougher nuts to crack.

It would be great for council members to interact on sites like these. And if they use a code maybe they can be more free with what they say. However, How someone can think that Max writes as Body Clevins (who is more likely to be Cody Blevins who has run twice for council) i don't know. Is he the watcher? who cares? At least after listening to request after request he has the guts to speak for the people he represents. I do think it is funny to see all of the "Anonymous" people complain that others write as anonymous themselves.

Except for the shooting people thing (in the face and in Iraq) I have always had a very soft spot in my heart (pardon the pun) for Dick Cheney and many postitions he takes. Especially his position and work on a strong executive branch, gay marriage, open borders, federal funding for heart research, and our new currency, the Amero. Here's wishing him, and peer reviewed science, all the best!

I just listened to the KONP "PodCast" of a biomass debate last week on the Todd Ortloff show. It's a step in the right direction that KONP will give air time to people who are concerned about the increased emissions from Nippon's biomass incinerator. The two speakers who opposed the plant and wanted a biomass moratorium were much more persuasive than the two speakers who were proponents.

Max Mania is so outside the mainstream here in Port Angeles that he was able to win an election against a much better known and much more mainstream opponent.

The perspective and values Max Mania expresses are so outside the mainstream here in Port Angeles that Sissi Bruch was able to run against a much more established and mainstream incumbent and win by a much larger margin than Mania did.

Max Mania is so out of touch with the mainstream reality of life here in the 21st century that he keeps being right on issues (think PenPly) even when he is the one in a six-to-one vote.

Yes, it's clear: Max Mania is deeply out of touch with the reality of life here in Port Angeles. He should "go back to Califonia" because obviously there's no way life here could get any better than it already is.

Sure. Keep telling yourself that. In the meantime, I'll keep being grateful we've finally got some thoughtful, informed people on our city council. And I'll keep voting for them, and people like them.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new, bigger smokestacks on Ediz Hook.

And, having more trucks running wood waste through town? Great.

These are the kinds of things that really enhance "curb appeal", and make selling real estate even easier.

I was looking back through the archives the other night and was struck/shaken by the comments of a regular poster in December of 2008 - a dialogue that from my naieve point of view looked like he was having with himself. The concept of leading an honest and modest life is easier said than done. Perhaps it's one of the hardest things to do these days, even out here in the boonies. There are leaders and there are followers and only history will show us who is who.
