Changes at the PDN

There has been a reorganization of the management of the Peninsula Daily News, Sequim Gazette and Forks Forum.  The production, advertising and circulation staffs of all three newspapers have been combined.  The news staffs will continue to operate separately.

John Brewer is now responsible for all operations at all three newspapers.  Steve Perry, PDN advertising director, now oversees the advertising and production staffs of all three papers.  John Brewer said:

“This reorganization unifies what had been separate and overlapping advertising, production and circulation staffs.  This makes us more efficient and allows us to have a consolidated sales and customer service effort to better serve Clallam and Jefferson counties.  Meanwhile, the newsrooms will continue to produce their intensely local products by remaining separate and competitive with each other.  We want to continue to produce the very best newspapers possible — while making it easier for our readers and advertisers to do business with us.”

John Brewer is a hack's hack. He's a sad little joke. He once had a paper route delivering the New York Times, and he came here and parlayed that into a cushy (responsibility-free) job at the PDN.

Now with this consolidation, the "news coverage" of local events can only get less accurate, less meaningful, and more vested in maintaining the illusion that things are alright here.

Of course, things are NOT alright here, as we all know.

And for the record, while we're on the subject, fuck the PDN, and fuck you, John Brewer. You're both embarrassments. I don't know a single person, not one, who has respect for either you or your shitrag of a paper.

YEs but, think of what an opportunity this is to, say, spread important gardening information more widely. It'll be great!!!

This is more of what is going on across the country: "big-box" big corporations coming into town, and driving out the local, independents.

With stores like Walmart and Home Depot, they just come in with all new facilities to compete and destroy their smaller pre-existing retail stores. With the so-called newspapers, they have all been bought up by one big corporation, with the same result: all profits leave the area.

It is just about money, because we all know that is the only thing that matters.

Interestingly, the Coho "crushing the float plane dock" in Victorias' Inner Harbor last night didn't make the "Breaking News" at the PDN.

According to the radio, the Coho ran into the float plane dock as it was backing up, and then continued on its' way to Port Angeles.

Anyone who has taken the ferry from Victoria knows that the ferry has to back out from its' dock in order to turn around, BUT, it is not even close to the area where the float planes tie up.

But, why should the "it's all good in Port Angeles" PDN report this?

BBC - Interesting, you think the source of his angst is hatred of treehuggers. Taking that further, one might think he's in the business just to deplete trees. I can tell he fetes his job.

2:05 - LOL - The dude fetes his own farts.

So the local pecker extension boat maker, one of our larger employers, has laid off some of the crew. Well, Monkeyville will just have to adjust.

What was the deal with the two big helicopters (and four smaller planes) buzzing Port Angeles from 11pm to after Midnight last night? No one seems to know, not even the FAA, and the PDN doesn't even mention it.
Anyone?

There are often low flying helicopters around the airport late at night. Last night was pretty bad though. It felt like South Central LA.

PDN has a story up now and buried in the first update is this:

"In a separate interview, Smith said Port Angeles police had served two simultaneous search warrants at businesses at the intersections of First and Ennis streets and Ninth and C streets, but he said this police action did not involve helicopters."

Paranoia my ass, it was JUST ANNOYING. Guess you must live far enough out that they weren't right over your house circling for an hour, and shining lights through the skylights. Dogs were barking, sounded like all hell had broken loose. Thanks. So, this is how Sequestering works...no helicopters at the 4th of July parade, but lots of them (unannounced) at midnight a week later. Nothing paranoid about it, it's stupidity in government, and arrogance, too boot.

Why was Port Angeles chosen for the "tactical urban" exercise by the US military? Why not Seattle, or Tacoma?

Who thinks Port Angeles represents a "normal" community?

Or maybe, if ONLY the feds WOULD really come into Port Angeles, and straighten out the place!

As someone else said, what about the 5 year kids who woke to the seeming assault from the air? What could their parents say, to comfort their fears?

What about the vets with PTSD, waking to being at war and under attack from an unknown force?

What about a command structure in the military that didn't know WHY Port Angeles was chosen, or why local authorities where not informed in advance?

We're supposed to be grateful, but, it doesn't always work out that way.

There are more undocumented workers in any two hotels in Seattle than all of Clallam County. We get the big border patrol complex.

Why? because Seattle or Tacoma would bitch. If PA were SEA or TAC the Rayonier site would be a park. The newspaper would report news. Occasionally, public officials would have to pay for malfeasance or corruption.
But PA ain't.

Does the military do these "urban tactical" exercises in Washington towns, often?

I can't remember hearing of others. Is this a new training program? Do communities get a choice?

I was driving through rural coastal CA in the mid 80s once. Suddenly I was "accompanied" by maybe 100 military ground type combat vehicles, including tanks, doing exercises. No artillery, and could see no people. It was strange, and went on for a few miles, and I would have freaked had there not been a sign, warning of possible military practicing. Maybe we should just get a clue, that that might happen around here? Put up a sign, next to the steel elk in Sequim? Just a thought. And not to be an ass.
