Victoria Elects New Mayor

Victoria's 2-term mayor, Dean Fortin, has been defeated by city councilwoman Lisa Helps.  According to the linked article, Fortin lost the election partly because of voter frustration over the failure to construct a sewage treatment system to stop pumping raw sewage into the Strait.

Homelessness and lack of affordable housing also contributed to his defeat.

If you look into it, both candidates are really decent people. Unlike here, where our mayor and council do next to nothing, the mayor and council members there are really involved. I googled to see what I could learn about them, and am VERY impressed. If only we had people like that here. The differences between Fortin and Helps are no big deal.

The sewer thing. As someone who cares about the waters around here, I've followed that topic for awhile. There is a small group that keeps changing its' name after it gets enough bad coverage, that act like the TeaParty types do, here. They have been using scare tactics and flat out lies in their attempts to stop any building of sewer treatment there.

So, come election time, there has already been a lot of negative press generated. And, people voted based on these lies and scare tactics.

Big deal. Happens here all the time. Look at what the topics were for the US Mid Term election. Stupid politics.

They are having the same problems we do and I don't think changing the leaders is going to make much difference.

We just need a lot fewer people here.

Listening to the coverage on the radio, it sounds like the voters WANT the sewage treatment project to get moving.

The campaign pledges were to build even better systems than were being worked on.

Seems like a lot of people will be watching to see if these new mayors and council people can come through with what they promised the voters.

Imagine losing by 89 votes! That must suck.

They said there was something like 35% voter turnout. Things probably would have been different if more people bothered to participate in the workings of the city they live in. Same old story. Sit back and complain, but when the time comes to do something concrete, most are no-shows.

That's what happens here, right?

BBC, nearly the entire community seems to agree with that sentiment and is acting in unison to achieve that. Thing is, the dicks and criminals REALLY like that.

I would suggest Austin. It still has a small town feel, plenty to do, nice people. And an easy drive to the country.

Get the fuck out of the PNW while you can.

@ 12:01 AM...

The leaders here have delusions of greatness and turning this into a tourist trap, I don't see it happening.

Rick is buying the property next door and is thinking of buying mine, if so I'm moving to Goldthwaite, Texas. Nice area and the town doesn't have delusions of grander.

Besides, I've seen enough fucking rain and cloud cover to last the rest of my life.
