Kenmore to Suspend Passenger Service in Mid-November
After its current flight schedule expires on November 14th, Kenmore Air Express will be discontinuing its passenger service between Port Angeles and Seattle's Boeing Field. Anyone who had reservations for after November 14th will be reimbursed. Airline president Todd Banks said:
“This decision was reached with great difficulty. We have worked very hard for more than 10 years to establish an economically viable route between Seattle and Port Angeles. We are proud of the safe, convenient service our dedicated flight crews and ground staff have provided on the Olympic Peninsula and are grateful for the loyal patronage we have received. But despite our best efforts, we have been unable to sustain sufficient passenger volumes at sufficient fares to adequately cover our operational costs in the market.”

disappointing
This just affirms what most of us know, but a few keep thinking isn't true. Port Angeles is a dive.
Another perspective: The Port Angeles business community, including it's long time Chamber Exec. Dir. Russ Veenama, are worthless.
Millions of Port Angeles' tax dollars have been spent, given to these groups to improve business in Port Angeles. What has come from all that?
How many millions were given to Kenmore in reduced rent, subsidies, etc?
But, the same people will say the same things. And, things will stay the same.
How unfair!
We have to suffer with Mr Veenema for another 14 months, but we lose Kenmore on the 14th.
Bye, bye Kenmore, but I drive everywhere anyway, I hate flying.
And, we have Veenamas' assessment in todays' PDN: It will be hard for real estate to sell homes in the area without a commercial air service.
"Nobody's surprised.. we've seen it coming for a long time."
So. When will the local "leadership" get the message? The things they have been promoting haven't worked. The rest of the country is moving ahead, while Port Angeles slips further into the sink hole.
Get a CLUE!
Really? Veenama said that? I mean, I know where the town's priorities are, they just usually aren't so transparent about it.
Hey, real estate people, you know what else will sell homes? Lower cost of living. Family wage jobs. Better parks. Less potholes. Less homelessness. Better walking and biking opportunities. No more tweakers. A city government with vision that makes sense and doesn't seem like a bunch of middle school children fighting.
But you go right on believing that jacking up the utility rates for a giant turd tank is vision that will sell homes!
When will PA wise up and give up on on PA (like the Chamber Director obviously did years ago - except for the pay check part of course!).
They say my vote counts so I will turn in my ballot today, you are really screwed now. hahahaha
It's simple economics....
Single flyer ... $210 round trip versus fuel, drive time, and parking. Depending on the length of your stay this is not too bad and can save time.
However, if you travel with a spouse and/or a family, it is nowhere near cost effective.
This leaves single travelers as your market, and evidently there are not of those to cover the expenses.
Bye, bye Kenmore
I agree with the simple economics example, but the real death move was in opting out of the vacation or out of state travel markets by moving to Boeing Field. That move made Sea Tac the "final destination" for all out of state travellers, meaning that if luggage was lost or flights were delayed, no accomodation for getting you or your luggage all the way to Port Angeles have to be made by the "other" airlines. Vacation flyers were forced to drive to Sea Tac, leaving only business travellers going to Seattle as their target market. Pretty small market.
Yes, but as was pointed out, three airlines have each tried to provide service to Port Angeles over the years. All have bailed out of Port Angeles, after being propped up with tax payer's money.
These three airlines did not go out of business. They all continue to be successful, anywhere but here.
So, we see that these same businesses do just fine, until they try to do business in Port Angeles.
Again, when will the locals wake up, and get a clue?
It's all so staged. It's all so sad. So much wrong shit that has occurred to this community created and implemented. The CEOs and CFOs and the politians they have bought are doing just fine while the everyday citizens lose their future. Is there any other community in all of Washington state that has digressed as much, in less than 10 years?
From the election results, we see Clallam is still stuck in yesterday. Still hoping unpleasant reality will just go away, and we all can return to the wonderful 1950s.
Amazingly, even with the recent spate of business closures in the headlines, the voters still think hanging onto the same people that have got us nowhere, are the right people to be in office now.
Granted, the vast majority of people couldn't be bothered to vote at all. 38% of registered voters, noted.
So, with around 50% of the vote, a "winner" gets the nod of 19% of registered voters votes.
Majority wins the day? With the vast majority,62%, of registered voters saying "What you are offering isn't enough to interest me", seems like some folks might do some serious thinking.
Of course, perhaps the powers-that-be like it when so few get involved. Suits their purposes just fine.
So, stay home. Whine about "government". And do nothing. That's how it is done in Clallam.
Oh, you did notice Jefferson County has 58% voter turnout?
