Curtailment of One of Nippon's Two Paper Machines

“Curtailment” sounds a little ominous. The curtailment will be effective this Friday.

Mill manager Steve Johnson said:

“Restart of the paper machine will occur when the economic conditions improve enough to justify resumption of operations.  The curtailment is necessary to balance capacity with the current economic climate and slow sales of uncoated mechanical papers.”

He said a restart date has not been scheduled.  And he didn't say how many employees would be affected by the curtailment.

He also said:

“I will not be providing any more information or comments than what is contained within this announcement as our competitors use the PDN as a source of intelligence for their strategy.”

They should convert to making ass wipe, there isn't anyone not buying it.

"The Olympic Medical Center Board of Commissioners met Wednesday afternoon and approved a pay raise for Chief Executive Officer Eric Lewis. As of December 7th, Lewis will receive a pay raise to $203,278.00, which also includes a car allowance of $350.00 per month along with a $50.00 cell phone allowance."

Shit, I don’t think anyone is worth that kind of money. High wages damn sure won’t help bring health care costs down.

It sounds like they are able to keep some folks employed in the cogeneration portion of the mill.

And, also being announced, moorage rentals at the Port's marina "slipping".

The guy from the Port is quoted saying that even when they give FREE moorage vouchers, nobody is interested.

That the slips for 20 foot boats are at 97% vacancy, but the guy is quoted say that even though people say the marina is vacant, it really isn't.

How is THAT for a perfect example of "head in the sand" approach to the problems facing Port Angeles? You really think these guys, with this kind of vision, are the ones that are going to solve our problems?

Good luck with that.

The cogeneration plant? You really think THAT is going to stay?

Do you remember reading about why they didn't build the one in Port Townsend? Because energy prices were too cheap, then?

With oil as cheap as it is now, I'm pretty sure the only thing keeping that project going is taxpayers money.

As so much is here, it is all about grant money. Taxpayers keeping these guys employed.

You noticed the Nippon folks can't be bothered to talk with the community about what is going on.

After all the millions of tax dollars the city has helped them get? They can't see fit to talk?

Gee, thanks alot.

As we see, a fine example of the Port's leadership provided by Billy.

They raise rates, Billy can't afford the increase and sells his boat. Now the Port gets nothing for the space.

The story headline IS about the continuing decline in people mooring their boats in Port Angeles.

"Curtailment"?!

These guys sure come up with the lingo, hunh?

To curtail means to cut back. Nippon is shutting down, stopping the operation on one of it's two paper units because of global market conditions. No known time that it will resume operations.

Don't these guys owe it to us, after all we've done for them, to be straight with us?

Manufacturing toilet paper to go along with the Turd Tank would be an excellent idea!

As you might know, Japan recorded it's third recession in the last two years, and just threw out it's government because the economy has collapsed so dramatically. A "snap election" has been called.

And, because the demand for oil has dropped so dramatically, followed by the drop in the price of oil, lots of countries around the world are really hurting because their economic base just collapsed.

Port Angeles better get real smart, real quick about becoming self reliant, or things are going to get really bad around here, real soon.
