Layoffs at Peninsula Plywood
Thirty-five Peninsula Plywood employees were laid off yesterday; that's almost a quarter of the company's work force.
PenPly President Josh Renshaw said:
"The weak market, combined with a seasonal downturn, would have created some layoffs anyway. But we've made some recent changes in process that have improved our productivity. That made the layoff larger than it would have been if it was just market based."

I was under the impression that they were making a specialty product that there was a big need for. I guess someone made that outlook look a little too rosy when trying to bet backers.
This is no big surprise.
Nor is it a surprise to read that the local Repubs are trying to make this some kind of indictment against local Dems. " Dicks/Van de Wege claim to have gotten the jobs" that were created at Pen Ply. Look now".
Hunh? Are we to understand that it is the responsibility of those that helped to get Pen Ply going again, to KEEP the people employed, no matter the market conditions?
There were many folks who had doubts about the wisdom of opening a wood products industrial facility during a economic meltdown that featured a crash in housing sales.
Will Pen Ply make it through the winter?
Are they listening to the economic news from countries around this interdependent world?

You poor thing. Sorry. I know things are difficult these days, and looking at anything other than Fox "News" is trying. (Fox is provided free to all homes that subscribe to cable/satellite TV, to make it easy to get the "news".)
But, if you can get out of your recliner long enough to look around, and check out the comments posted at the PDN website, where THIS story was ORIGINALLY posted, you will see the Blame Game just like Uncle Bill would approve of.

Hmmm.. This post has that "Oh SO Familiar" quality to it.
Of course, the Neanderthal that wrote the post is far too stupid to develop a cogent argument, much less spell.
Pen Ply promoters convinced local entities to pitch in to re-start the failed mill during the housing collapse, when not only were virtually NO new homes being built, but the nation was undergoing a foreclosure swamping. Still is.
So, Pen Ply went through the summer months, when most home building takes place, putting its' employees on "furlough" until demand could catch up with supply. Now, a few weeks later, it is laying off 1/4 of its' employees. All this for a company that started operations in March, 6 months ago!
But the dipshit who posted the above note cannot be bothered to address the realities affecting this community. They fall back to sarcastic remarks trying to belittle legitimate concerns about negative impacts created by Pen Ply. They don't care about how the community was duped once again into supporting a failing operation.
But, if it was a "Liberal" who somehow remotely associated with this mill operation failing, OH BOY! This poster would be ALL over Renshaw!
