8,000 Attend Sprint Boat Races
Port Angeles' first sprint boat racing event attracted 8,000 spectators yesterday. Dan Morrison, co-owner of the track, said:
“We have counted 8,000 right now and we are only halfway through the races. People are still coming in.”

8000? Maybe a misprint with one too many zeros?
I wouldn't trust anything Dan Morrison says about attendance figures (or anything else, for that matter).
Gaia was greatly displeased by this waste of fossil fuels and the resultant pollution this "event" caused.
Gaia blesses those who tread gently upon her!
yeah, i was there, 800 tops, who are these idiots
"Gaia blesses those who tread gently upon her!"
Well said Calendula!
Let's see:
$1 million plus for property
$250K plus, for property development etc.
10,000 people at $15 per head = $150K
less taxes $58k
less expenses (who knows, lets say zero)
Equals $92k per year in profit
ROI = 13 1/2 years
NO THANKS
Next: Promoters will sell the land at a huge profit. Some will go back to the Port that suddenly realizes that it needed it for airport expansion after all. The rest (east of Dry Creek) will become a housing development. And the A2Z owners will whine that "over regulation" of their sprint boat races made them abandon that effort for the more lucrative land sales.
@capitalist: I would say your numbers are pretty close estimates. The may have enhanced revenues from parking (oops they gave that money to the High School) Maybe they made some money on their beer garden (Oh, yeah, THAT went to the Ridge)…Gee where IS the profit motive for these miscreants? Maybe they’re counting on Govt. grant money, Or Govt. Economic Development funds, etc. No wait, these guys are PAYING taxes…
@Gaia: While we’re talking money, what’s the total on the Elwha “Restoration”? Please explain how the introduction of hatchery fish from outside the system will help the recovery of Native fish stocks. These Native stocks were the reason for the dams’ removal in the first place, were they not?
Capitalist, I think you missed a couple parts of equation.
Press reports stated that A2Z expects to hold 3 or 4 Sprint boat races per year.
Press reports also stated A2Z intends to offer other events at the site. One cited was "rockcrawling".
On a 100 acres, a lot of different such events could be envisioned. Why not a full fledged drag strip, with the nitro funny cars?
A2Z could have events every weekend.
Then, what do the numbers look like?
Anon 8:19
You probably hit the nail on the head regarding the land.
They are already trying to sell 20 some acres of their land for a hefty profit, see local listings. Rumor has it, they pissed away a healthy offer already from an anonymous buyer.
I suspect they will blame failure on some public enterprise, sue the shit out of them, and the taxpayers will have to pay the settlement.
anon 10:31,
that would clearly change the ROI calculation, however until such events are planned and advertising expenses and planning expenses figured in, it makes it impossible to include revenue numbers with no cost basis. Also, your every weekend comment clearly demonstrates you're wearing rose colored glasses, weather will not allow every weekend events.
Nope, I still would not touch this investment.
WTF,
Anything done to aid Gaia is a blessing and a benefit.
I tread gently on Gaia. Do you?
really 8,000? I didn't see that much traffic....and, 8,000 people is a good amount. The Crap Fest (wait, that's Crab FEST) claims to drawn 12,000 to 18,000 people, and Arts In Action gets about 15,000. The thing is you can SEE it in the traffic.
I did NOT see the uptick reported. Some traffic, but not 8k worth, as it would have been obvious. I doubt their numbers are solid.
Calendula X. Moonflower, WTF? is clearly a REAL man. He defied the real estate cronies of Port Angeles, and drinks gasoline for breakfast. And you?
I don't get the sense that they expect to make a lot of money off of these races, they just built the course cuz of their love of the sport.
The sport didn't make them rich, they make that kind of money in other ways and choose to spend a lot of it on that so they could have a track here being as they live here.
Smokey Yunick (if you know who he was) never made all that much racing, but he spent a hell of a lot of his money on it.
And they will also, for as long as they can keep it here, but lets face it, it's not about the money to them, it's about their love of racing those boats.
I can assure you that not a one of them are making a living at racing them.
And they really don't care about being green, they care about racing those boats.
BBC, anyone who spends well over a million dollars on property and construction cares about making money. I know Morrison and his partners.....ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY..... DON'T BE SO NAIVE
"And they really don't care about being green, they care about racing those boats."
Oh, That makes me feel SO much better about the whole thing.
Well, first the 8000 number was verified by the Washington State Patrol (unless they're part of the "conspiracy") so I guess estimates from people who weren't even present, based on a "feeling" about traffic, might just be a little case of sour grapes.
Anybody who has actually been paying attention knows that Morrison initially tried to lease enough space to build his track, next he tried to purchase a portion of the land. The Port wouldn’t consider any of those options, and he was forced to buy the whole parcel in order to go ahead. Now, of course, Morrison’s attempt to rid himself of some of the land he didn’t want in the first place is viewed as proof of something sinister.
Face it kids, this thing went off without a hitch. None of your dire predictions actually occurred, and you’re now reduced to these silly posts for lack of anything substantive to be outraged about.
Realtors in Clallam County fear to step into the light of lest WTF? drop the dreaded D-Bomb upon them!
What were the dire predictions?
Oh, poor WTF?, no really cares what you think or your so-called "Solutions" or your invective. Poor you.
"What were the dire predictions?"
Beats me. I didn't see any "dire predictions" mentioned in this thread.
Must be a side effect of those anger control meds WTF? has been taking lately.
What were the dire predictions?
Here's a couple:
I can't wait until 101 is shut down by the first RV crash if this thing actually comes off. And I can't wait to see how much people love having those same RVS clogging up city streets. No plan - no problem!
Right. No business plan. No feasibility study. No traffic study. No emergency or accident planning. No nothing.
All of which adds up to no chance of success.
From some guy named "Anonymous"
Imagine their dissapointment that no one was killed.
"Face it kids, this thing went off without a hitch."
I am against the concept in principle, but congratulations to all those involved. If 8,000 people enjoyed the show and spent some money in P.A. it can't be all bad.
WTF? recounts the "dire predictions".. all, he seems to think, "From some guy named "Anonymous".
WTF? and Randall just cannot accept that there are a LOT of us, who post as "Anonymous".
Seems to suit their personal ego needs to think there is just one evil person out there who just stirs up all these concerns. That, except for that one evil person, everything would otherwise be okay in Port Angeles, the US, and the world.
But, as anyone can see, we "anonymous" are the majority of those that post on this blog.
But, a majority doesn't mean squat when you think can just spew insults on anyone who says anything you don't agree with, and that will somehow prove your points..
Keep at it! You prove the truth with your actions.
The mental health facilities on 8th Street have done wonders for WTF?. Numerous posts and only mild invective and no profanity laden blow outs.
WTF?, we support you in your quest for metal health, stability and inner peace.
Namaste!

You cannot prove you are a majority.
6 ID's posted on this thread!
Anonymous,
Calendula,
Capitalist,
WTF,
BBC,
& Myself.
1 out of 6 is not a majority.
"But, as anyone can see, we "anonymous" are the majority of those that post on this blog."
that is a hilarious fantasy!
Speaking of dire predictions:
(Don’t get too comfortable Randall; they’ll turn that right around as soon as you disagree with them on something else)
And as predicted despite the fact RCP hasn't posted on That subject for months, we have:
... Randall just cannot accept that there are a LOT of us, who post as "Anonymous".
Of course RCP's sin was stating that "it can't be all bad"
As far as the "anonymous" reference, that was all I had to quote...
Golly, maybe you should publish a rule book...Now, YOU can insult my neighbors, call us stupid rednecks, Lie about attendance figures, slander the promoters, compare us to the kid branding guy, etc.. But that’s not insult and invective - right?
I know you really like that "anonymous" moniker, but you might try one that's a little more descriptive. I don't think anybody's using "HYPOCRITE"

"You cannot prove you are a majority."
Oh, brother! I'm not even going to waste my time with this non-issue. Anyone can look through the threads of the past year or two, and draw their own conclusions.
Ooooo-eeee-ooooo!
Yes, "we" Anonymi are out to get you WTF?, RCP and all the rest of you!
HA ha ha ha ha!
Yeah, on this thread. Try looking at all the threads. Anonymous is easiest for most people who post. WTF thinks that anonymous is a girl, and gets all hissy fitty about that. Then he thinks that we are all one person and gets all snitty.
What was being referred to as "anonymous" is also the people who put a name on the post using the name/URL selection on Blogger. (i.e.: calendula/the watcher --both in black, not blue, meaning that it's not using a "registered name" )
It is very obvious that it is NOT one anony, because the person would have to be online 24/7 AND because the writing styles vary. Only an outright nimrod of a dumbbunny would ever think that one person was anony.
tard is as 'tard does.
the pdn number of 8k is what was suspect, in that they always take whatever nonsense is fed to them. Since this was not a chamber number or a pada number maybe it is true.
However, for the most part, numbers for attendance here are always inflated and the pdn does nothing to research or do any reporting.
What am I thinking.? It's the pdn!
Geezz, WTF? I hadn't noticed how paranoid, insecure, and defensive you have become, until recently. Just about every post from you these days is a personalized tirade that shows this.
What happened?
"It is very obvious that it is NOT one anony, because the person would have to be online 24/7 AND because the writing styles vary."
So you are one person with a multiple personality disorder and a case of insomnia...try using logic rather than insults such as...
"Only an outright nimrod of a dumbbunny would ever think that one person was anony.
tard is as 'tard does."
RCP and WTF both need to get over their weird OCD about "anonymous" posters (yes, in the plural!). There are places up on Eighth that can help you with this.
" Only an outright nimrod of a dumbbunny would ever think that one person was anony.
tard is as 'tard does."
Well, that does sum up RCP and WTF pretty well!
Oh golly, oh gosh, Papa and I were afraid this would happen. Lisa dear you seem to be going through another of your "we" episodes.
You remember the first time we went through this. We bought you those little troll dolls you wanted so bad. Then you ripped the legs off your Barbie doll and spay painted her purple and called her the Queen of the Trolls.
After that it was "we" want this and "we" won't do that. You always insisted that the majority ruled and that you had to ask troll Barbie what the majority would want.
You know we have spent hours with you down there at the clinic on 8th with those nice doctors.
You come home now and I will bake some of those cookies you like.
So sorry P.A. Online blog persons. She get's like this you know.
toddles. Lisa's Mom
What’s different is that in this case I don’t agree with you. It’s all shits and giggles when I’m bashing a conservative … But bashing a Liberal’s self-righteousness, or pointing out their hypocrisy is strictly forbidden. This may only be one of those “cultural” misunderstandings… Apparently while I was attending the School of Hard Knocks, you were attending the I Can Dish It out, But I Can’t Take School of Technology. Besides, I’ve never insulted you. I’ve only insulted “Anonymous”. You can’t be stupid enough to think there’s only one, can you?
"RCP and WTF both need to get over their weird OCD about "anonymous" posters.."
Yeah, kinda sad to watch.
That includes "Paladin", who looks to be a creation of RCP.
i came on here to counter false and unfounded statements regarding Drew Schwab. i found irritating the "anonymice" is fun so i support anyone who does that.
the bottom line is that he/she/they/it are not a majority on this blog or in port angeles.
ps: oh gosh, oh golly...you forgot to tell me i should go to 8th st. for help. (anonymous=sheep)
WTF? said...
"What’s different is that in this case I don’t agree with you."
No, I don't think so. People can disagree with a point of view without taking the disagreement so personally. But, what changed is your making everything a big personal tirade.
As you did, once again, in this last rant.
A2Z with the complicity of the city and port rode roughshod over the rights of the public in order to have their fun economic opportunities. This isn't about whether the sport of sprint boating should be conducted or enjoyed. It is about how the promoters go about doing it: greedily flaunting the law and cheating the public to get what they want.
"i found irritating the "anonymice" is fun so i support anyone who does that."
Glad you admit to being nothing but a troll.
Lisa's Mom asked me to come on here and let you "anonymous" posters know that we are offering a new group over at the clinic on 8th. I can see from the thread here you all know how to get there.
This group is about dealing with identity issues and finding a way for you to all come out of the gloom into a happy place. You will search your dark inner pain and overcome it. This will let you develop a new understanding of your own personal identity and help you become a more productive and successful citizen of Port Angeles and the world.
Come on over and sign up.
regards, Dr. Positive
"It is about how the promoters go about doing it: greedily flaunting the law and cheating the public to get what they want."
hmmm i see, what is important are your "anomymous" allegations of wrong-doing with no facts or even a direction to search for supporting information.
the "Federation of Whistleblowers" may not renew your membership you know.
"Glad you admit to being nothing but a troll."
don't be ridiculous!
Paladin, you have even less credibility than Jim McEntire.
Jabber away as you wish. You stated what you try to do here, just say things to "irritate" others here. Who wants to waste their time with that crap.
Too bad you couldn't find contributing to community a better use of your efforts.
"hmmm i see, what is important are your "anomymous" allegations of wrong-doing with no facts or even a direction to search for supporting information."
Go check out the Port meeting minutes (they are online) from the time period dealing with this for a start - you'll see plenty on the official record about how this was a deal ripe with conflicts of interest and other issues. You might also notice how, gee whiz, when this was first brought up at a Port meeting, it wasn't on the agenda. Then it kinda just got rushed through. And on and on, with the Port ignoring common sense, ethics, and the concerns of the Park Commission, the City Council, and members of the public.
Check the records, read the archived articles fromt he PDN, then maybe you'll have a clue.
hmmm, yes i see. there was a public meeting and records were kept. lawyers and public officials were involved and the matter was settled quickly and efficiently. there fore you claim wrong-doing.
you have no credibility. it must be irritating for you to know that.
Right. I have no credibility. I was AT THE MEETINGS. AND I have read the minutes of said meetings. And I have read the articles about said meetings. And you, apparently, have not done any of those things.
Yet you know that "the matter was settled quickly and efficiently," and that I lack credibility.
(And the Port, oh, our wonderous and well-respected, port, HAS credibility?)
Well, thanks for posting, Mr. McEntire. And by the way, "therefore" is one word.
7:16 AM, September 26, 2011
i checked, there was no one at the meeting named "anonymous". you are bluffing.
