8,000 Attend Sprint Boat Races

Port Angeles' first sprint boat racing event attracted 8,000 spectators yesterday.  Dan Morrison, co-owner of the track, said:

“We have counted 8,000 right now and we are only halfway through the races.  People are still coming in.”

8000? Maybe a misprint with one too many zeros?
I wouldn't trust anything Dan Morrison says about attendance figures (or anything else, for that matter).

Let's see:
$1 million plus for property
$250K plus, for property development etc.
10,000 people at $15 per head = $150K
less taxes $58k
less expenses (who knows, lets say zero)
Equals $92k per year in profit
ROI = 13 1/2 years
NO THANKS

Next: Promoters will sell the land at a huge profit. Some will go back to the Port that suddenly realizes that it needed it for airport expansion after all. The rest (east of Dry Creek) will become a housing development. And the A2Z owners will whine that "over regulation" of their sprint boat races made them abandon that effort for the more lucrative land sales.

@capitalist: I would say your numbers are pretty close estimates. The may have enhanced revenues from parking (oops they gave that money to the High School) Maybe they made some money on their beer garden (Oh, yeah, THAT went to the Ridge)…Gee where IS the profit motive for these miscreants? Maybe they’re counting on Govt. grant money, Or Govt. Economic Development funds, etc. No wait, these guys are PAYING taxes…

@Gaia: While we’re talking money, what’s the total on the Elwha “Restoration”? Please explain how the introduction of hatchery fish from outside the system will help the recovery of Native fish stocks. These Native stocks were the reason for the dams’ removal in the first place, were they not?

Capitalist, I think you missed a couple parts of equation.

Press reports stated that A2Z expects to hold 3 or 4 Sprint boat races per year.

Press reports also stated A2Z intends to offer other events at the site. One cited was "rockcrawling".

On a 100 acres, a lot of different such events could be envisioned. Why not a full fledged drag strip, with the nitro funny cars?

A2Z could have events every weekend.

Then, what do the numbers look like?

You probably hit the nail on the head regarding the land.

They are already trying to sell 20 some acres of their land for a hefty profit, see local listings. Rumor has it, they pissed away a healthy offer already from an anonymous buyer.

I suspect they will blame failure on some public enterprise, sue the shit out of them, and the taxpayers will have to pay the settlement.

Blogger Capitalist said...

anon 10:31,

that would clearly change the ROI calculation, however until such events are planned and advertising expenses and planning expenses figured in, it makes it impossible to include revenue numbers with no cost basis. Also, your every weekend comment clearly demonstrates you're wearing rose colored glasses, weather will not allow every weekend events.

Nope, I still would not touch this investment.

really 8,000? I didn't see that much traffic....and, 8,000 people is a good amount. The Crap Fest (wait, that's Crab FEST) claims to drawn 12,000 to 18,000 people, and Arts In Action gets about 15,000. The thing is you can SEE it in the traffic.
I did NOT see the uptick reported. Some traffic, but not 8k worth, as it would have been obvious. I doubt their numbers are solid.

I don't get the sense that they expect to make a lot of money off of these races, they just built the course cuz of their love of the sport.

The sport didn't make them rich, they make that kind of money in other ways and choose to spend a lot of it on that so they could have a track here being as they live here.

Smokey Yunick (if you know who he was) never made all that much racing, but he spent a hell of a lot of his money on it.

And they will also, for as long as they can keep it here, but lets face it, it's not about the money to them, it's about their love of racing those boats.

I can assure you that not a one of them are making a living at racing them.

Well, first the 8000 number was verified by the Washington State Patrol (unless they're part of the "conspiracy") so I guess estimates from people who weren't even present, based on a "feeling" about traffic, might just be a little case of sour grapes.
Anybody who has actually been paying attention knows that Morrison initially tried to lease enough space to build his track, next he tried to purchase a portion of the land. The Port wouldn’t consider any of those options, and he was forced to buy the whole parcel in order to go ahead. Now, of course, Morrison’s attempt to rid himself of some of the land he didn’t want in the first place is viewed as proof of something sinister.
Face it kids, this thing went off without a hitch. None of your dire predictions actually occurred, and you’re now reduced to these silly posts for lack of anything substantive to be outraged about.

Here's a couple:

I can't wait until 101 is shut down by the first RV crash if this thing actually comes off. And I can't wait to see how much people love having those same RVS clogging up city streets. No plan - no problem!

Right. No business plan. No feasibility study. No traffic study. No emergency or accident planning. No nothing.

All of which adds up to no chance of success.

From some guy named "Anonymous"

Imagine their dissapointment that no one was killed.

But, as anyone can see, we "anonymous" are the majority of those that post on this blog.

But, a majority doesn't mean squat when you think can just spew insults on anyone who says anything you don't agree with, and that will somehow prove your points..

And as predicted despite the fact RCP hasn't posted on That subject for months, we have:

Of course RCP's sin was stating that "it can't be all bad"

As far as the "anonymous" reference, that was all I had to quote...

Golly, maybe you should publish a rule book...Now, YOU can insult my neighbors, call us stupid rednecks, Lie about attendance figures, slander the promoters, compare us to the kid branding guy, etc.. But that’s not insult and invective - right?

Yeah, on this thread. Try looking at all the threads. Anonymous is easiest for most people who post. WTF thinks that anonymous is a girl, and gets all hissy fitty about that. Then he thinks that we are all one person and gets all snitty.
What was being referred to as "anonymous" is also the people who put a name on the post using the name/URL selection on Blogger. (i.e.: calendula/the watcher --both in black, not blue, meaning that it's not using a "registered name" )
It is very obvious that it is NOT one anony, because the person would have to be online 24/7 AND because the writing styles vary. Only an outright nimrod of a dumbbunny would ever think that one person was anony.

the pdn number of 8k is what was suspect, in that they always take whatever nonsense is fed to them. Since this was not a chamber number or a pada number maybe it is true.
However, for the most part, numbers for attendance here are always inflated and the pdn does nothing to research or do any reporting.
What am I thinking.? It's the pdn!

Go check out the Port meeting minutes (they are online) from the time period dealing with this for a start - you'll see plenty on the official record about how this was a deal ripe with conflicts of interest and other issues. You might also notice how, gee whiz, when this was first brought up at a Port meeting, it wasn't on the agenda. Then it kinda just got rushed through. And on and on, with the Port ignoring common sense, ethics, and the concerns of the Park Commission, the City Council, and members of the public.

Check the records, read the archived articles fromt he PDN, then maybe you'll have a clue.
