Clallam County Will Withdraw from ICLEI

Clallam County residents who have been having nightmares about black helicopters and jackbooted U.N. thugs bringing America to her knees — you can sleep soundly now.  Clallam County will be withdrawing from the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI)  at the end of this year.

It's a money issue for the County; $1200 yearly dues to ICLEI can be better spent retaining staff. But, if the decision to let the county's membership lapse is something that inflates the egos of tea-baggers and makes them think that they are powerful, then so be it. Our commissioners are wise enough to know when not to sweat the small stuff.

You are so right, Tom. This issue has been one of the biggest wastes of time and energy for all involved, and only serves to distract people from paying attention to the real ills in our country!

I was at the recent County Commissioners meeting where all the anti-U.N., ICLEI-paranoid people railed against the Commissioners...And all I can say is that I'm glad I live in the city. Yeah, we have yahoos too, but not like the anti-authority, hungry for anarchy yahoos that live out in the county. At that meeting, I'd say the average age of the people all bent out of shape was somewhere well north of 65, so this fever will pass as they continue to die off. (It's just a demographic facts, folks - sorry.)

As for the paranoia itself, well, it doesn't make a lot of sense. "The U.N. wants to destroy jobs!" Well, why? No answer is available to that question. "The U.N. wants to move us all into concrete apartments in Seattle!" So specific, yet, again, no explanation of WHY they would want to do this, how they would do this, etc.

But my very favorite part was the person who "explained" that the E.P.A. gives money to the U.N., which gives it BACK to the E.P.A., which then does the bidding of the U.N. because they gave them money. Money that was, according to this theory, theirs in the first place. Huh??? Like I said, paranoid, but nonsensical.

We've got one planet, people. With an increasingly interconnected economy. With joint military actions. With truly global problems with pollution, population, exploitation, etc. A lot of the food in your house RIGHT NOW probably came from other countries. You don't have to be a communist hungering for a one-world government to acknowledge that we are part of a global community. We ARE all interconnected, whether you like it or not, so please grow up and stop wasting time worrying over phantom threats. We have real problems to deal with, and these delusions are, at best, a distraction.

“committed to sustainable development,”

You know, that's just bullshit, the full sentence would be, “committed to sustainable capitalistic development,”

But I'm just fine with less development here, true country folks don't need it and the city slickers with their private planes.

At yesterday's League of Women Voters Candidate Forum, Jim McIntire was decrying ICLEI and playing to the tinfoil hat crowd. He put on quite a performance. I'd never seen him in person before, but after seeing and hearing him yesterday, it was clear to me that he is REALLY right wing and out of touch, as well as pompous and arrogant. I had kind of disliked him before because of his record, but came away yesterday feeling that he is totally unsuited for elective office in Clallam County. He sure won't get my vote.

Yep! This is very true. But, as you saw, he knows he has his constituency of fellow right-wingers that will vote for ANY candidate that mumbles the usual fear based garbage.

"Progress" in society is slow for this very reason.
