Sprint Boat Races this Saturday

On Saturday, August 11th, the Sprint Boat Races will commence at the Extreme Sports Park, 2917 W. Edgewood Drive, Port Angeles.  Warmup runs will start at 9 a.m.; the races will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More than 5,000 people attended last year's Sprint Boat Races and an even larger turnout is expected this Saturday.

What a shame that this "Extreme Sports Park" couldn't have been built in an area where it would have less of an impact on traffic and the environment --- such as the location of the former speedway between PA & Sequim on Hwy 101. But, I suppose that wouldn't have penciled-out as well for the promoters. Constructing the track inside city limits where environmentally protective permit conditions would likely be few (if the city required permits at all) ----- well ....

In fact, the first place that was tried for the Sports Park, WAS the area near the speedway, but it is designated a critical wetland, and couldn't be disrupted. Also, the current track IS inside the city limits, but that obviously has no effect on the Army Corps.

Anon 10:45 AM ---- you are kidding about an alleged critical area being the property selection disqualifier for the old speedway site off Hwy 101, right?

So - City officials will look the other way on wetland violations, no matter how brazen, but not necessarily the Army Corps. Those pesky Federales!

How many people attend the Juan de Fuca arts festival? The Crab Fest? The Lav Fest?

The PDN certainly has been pandering to the sprint boat crowd. Article after article; picture after picture; a special newspaper section, and then a full page ad full of little tiny names of smaller-minded people who think that running an ad in the PDN is going to influence ---- who, exactly?
Why no follow-up article in the PDN on the outcome of the Army Corps investigation into wetland and federal law violations?

Took my 13 year old daughter to the race. It was a lot of fun. First time for me and I will go again.
