Requiring Voter Approval for Public Development Authorities

Today's PDN online poll asks:

"Should creation of public development authorities — like the current ones in Port Angeles and Port Townsend — require voter approval first?"

With 621 votes cast so far, the results are:

Yes — 89.4%

No — 7.2%

Undecided — 3.4%

Mixed feelings about this.

Harbor Works was formed behind closed doors. It should never have been formed.

Voter Approval means maybe a special ballot. It costs money for that. Less money that Harbor Works threw out the window, true.

Ideally, we would have people on the City Council who would have had the forsight to have nipped this whole mess in the bud.

I would like to see a better City Council, and better Governance of our taxpayers money. Not politics as usual...

Lets see now, Harborworks, the Graving Yard fiasco, the sleazy attempt to steal the Conservation Board election, Edna's ouster of the Farmer's Market....wouldn't it be easier to simply ban the Republicans from local politics?

And how do we propose to get people to bother voting? The recent City survey only saw 7.5% of city residents returning them. Now budget decisions are going to be based on that meager percentage. In a representative democracy, leaders are elected to make decisions. The problem with the City over the last few years, is that they made lots of important decisions in private, cutting who knows what kind of deals, not in public, as should have been done.

lets get RID of the lousy mail in ballots ONLY, and get some voting booths set up. I hate the mail in ballots. They get mixed up with the bills.

The original idea behind HW was a good one. It sidestepped a number of legal limitation on the city and port. But like many things around here, good idea, horrible execution.

Whoever put the team together, is the problem, and reason it failed. After looking at the HW proposal(s) to Rayonier, I would recommend drug testing for the board member.

Voter approval isn't going to solve the primary problem, which is wasting taxpayer money. And the fact that this thing was create and FUNDED beyond closed doors.

So instead of voter approval for creation, how about capping funding on creation. They can get a little bit, say 25k, as 'seed' money, to turn the lights on and get some letterhead.

Then require voter approval for increase funding beyond 50k/year. That will at last clip the wings of the shysters and take the profit margin out.

That would stop this from happening again, and enable the city to still use a necessary tool for economic development.

As for HW. We need to put pressure on them to release ALL financial records so that the public can see all payouts/payoffs/paychecks. I think the city should post this information on their website for all.

Its the LEAST they can do at this point.

Edna, this is REALLY getting tiresome. I've worked with you for years, and I know your phrases. Please demonstrate some dignity and self restraint THIS time, and stop with this stupid anti Max campaign. You lost. Accept the will of the voters in the same way you would have, had they voted to re-elect you. They had a choice. They decided NOT to re-elect you.

Be honorable, and stop with these stupid posts.

I AM your friend, but it is getting hard to keep supporting you when I see you posting here. It is embarrassing.

Anyone who attended any public meetings, whether they were of the Chamber, PABA, City Council, or any place where Edna could speak her mind heard full well about her views about the Farmer's Market being on Laurel Street. It would not have been an issue anyone else cared about, if it had not been for Edna.

It was totally as a result of Ednas' relentless campaign that the then sympathetic city council voted to kick the Farmer's Market out of Downtown. I was there. Many others were, too. We know. We have no doubt.

And all you squawk-a-doodlers ... haters gonna hate! Hate Edna, hate Kaj, hate HW, hate "industry" burn with such intense hatred that PA lights up with your fiery incandescant glow.

And I'm not Edna. I know, I know ... you squawk-a-doodlers will now say "But that's exactly what you would say if you were Edna trying not be Edna, but we know you're Edna trying not to be Edna because we all went to Berkely, at least some of us who didn't drop out did, and we're smarter than you!" I've saved WTF the trouble of saying it.

You have no idea who I am! But hey, if you think I'm Edna that just shows the true depths of your narrowmindedness and your hate. Squawk-a-doodle-doo, Haters!

Oh say, '13 will mark three years that "Mania" will have been on the council. Three years at one job! Golly, "Max" what an achievement!

Aw now ... who loves ya? ;P

Baffled again, huh? I would imagine you spend a good portion of your pointless life in that condition. Apparently you believe that “Taking the gloves off" means something like "act a fool" or "make stupid ugly remarks" , you know, like you do.

All I meant was that we don't have to pretend you have anything worthwhile to say. That even though you are obviously less fortunate than we are, we needn’t cut you any slack. I hope this clears things up for you.

problem that plagues the country plagues this blog -- people fight amongst each other on small points, yelling, pointing fingers and calling each other names -- instead of going after the corruption in every aspect of government.
The government is rotten to the core. The news media is only saying what the government says. The people representing us are are only in it for what they can get.
We'd better wise up, or we'll all end up enslaved by debt, without jobs, paying outrageous fees for the simplest of things.

One need only read the post to decide if the poster is me ... or the sadsack. I find it interesting that this fool uses this childish tactic rather than simply blowing me out of the water with facts, figures, logic, etc...but of course that’s how Republican "politics" works. Doesn't matter if its Edna, Dick or whoever. Too stupid to actually debate. Too dishonest to actually discuss anything. They simply revert to what they do best.

Maybe if I was some old geezer living alone in a trailer on the outskirts of town, on 12 dollars a month, eating dandilions and bacon grease to survive, it wouldn't matter... might even impress the crowd at the Fairmount. I don't really relish the idea of having to blow some fanatic weirdo off my front porch, so I'll remain anonymous, thank you.

Interesting response. The post Edna replies to is supportive and compassionate:
"I AM your friend, but it is getting hard to keep supporting you when I see you posting here. It is embarrassing."

But she is so blinded by her hate and narrowminded view of what is going on in Port Angeles, of her loss to Max Mania, that all she can do is post repeatedly as "WTF?", and any other distraction and disruption to the conversations here she can come up with. For starters, what MAN do you know of that has EVER used the phrase "Squawk-a-doodle-doo"? Or, "Who loves ya"? Clear evidence that it is Edna posting these sad diatribes.

Poor thing.

ANY independent thinker can clearly see what is going on here. I do.

In a democracy, we usually get the government we deserve. If we keep electing slime, it must be because we want slimy government. Voter Approval for Public Development Athorities won't alter that.

Good laugh! Thanks.

If you look at the "evidence", including that person who recognizes Ednas' way of speaking, I don't see that there is any doubt that it is Edna that is posting all the crap on this blog site.

If for no other reason... WHO CARES about Max Mania so obsessively other than the ONLY person who lost to him in a public vote???

All the other disruptive posts are clearly the same person, with virtually the same point of view.

Maybe a boycott of "Temptations"?

While this idiot using my screen name is confusing, and the constant babble of her other posts disruptive, I think we've already given her too much of the attention she obviously craves...as for a boycott of "Temptations", none of the people I know will set foot in the place after the Farmer's Market incident. Besides, i don't know anyone in the market for overpriced tourist junk, anyway.

You're right.

Too bad Edna lacks any real concern or consideration for anyone but herself, as we all saw during the Farmer's Market trashing with her as the lead, and here with her non-stop attempts to disrupt any and all conversations by others.
