The Port Angeles City Council has OK'd a resolution allowing city staff to pay up to five percent more for products and services within the Port Angeles city limits and eastern urban growth area, even if those products/services are cheaper from outside sources.

Right.

Symbolic, if nothing else.

Sure was a short article. What was in the bag? What exactly is produced within the city limits? And who is this Mike guy? I'm intrigued!

This should be a Jefferson-Clallam county wide joint effort, a no brainer.

But, NO!

Five percent, big whoop, I drive to Sequim sometimes to save twenty percent, or more.

Don't tell us how to spend our goddamn money so you rich assholes can live well.

I guess we're to "Buy Local", regardless of whether the merchants have what we want, or have a bad attitude, or are charging too much?

BBC - Except for the extra foul language, I agree - it pisses me off - what are they going to buy, boats? Pot holders made by seniors? A sack of moldy clothes from Goodwill? Perhaps if at City Council meetings, city functions etc. they made an effort to provide a plate of scruptious snacks from a certain establishment, maybe their biz would pick up and they wouldn't have to charge so much.

Are the crickets downtown organic? That might be a business opportunity for someone.

Most of my friends talk like I do and I'm not going to apologize for it, or them.

From the article...

"The resolution gives local businesses a “5 percent advantage” before city staff go outside the local area, Edwards said."

That's awesome! What the hell does it mean? That 5% of the city's business has to come from locals? Or... what? As usual, PDN doesn't like to get into details.

Why would you do that? Just get new friends more suitable to you.

You know what I think would be great? If this forum required people to sign in with their real names. The dialogue would be better.

Diane,

This subject has been raised here, before, on more than one occasion.

There are many reasons why there are people who choose to post anonymously, and I applaud Tom for providing a forum where the free expression of ideas is considered more important than knowing who expresses them.

Some people, like Billy, are proud to make their views known, and have no concerns about who knows that. Others have vulnerabilities.

Not Andrew May said: Good luck with that Diane the nameless cowards here will claim that in a small town like Port Angeles they will be tormented for making up lies and false info (as they should) Besides Tom has no desire to host a credible and thoughtful forum but rather just a free-for-all.

Alright then, "Diane," if that's your real name...Please prove both your integrity and your hypothesis by actually providing your real, full name, and a way to verify same. Because I'm sure you wouldn't want to be seen as a hypocrite, right?

Thanks!

Yes, because that's worked out so well for the PDN.

What's made here? A number of things but I know something that isn't, electronics, I know a lady (now dead) that pretty much hated it here because in Everett she had a job in a place that assembled electronic stuff.

She had limited skills but loved doing that, she tried a few other jobs but didn't like them so became a bar fly drunk.

I've tried to buy several things locally lately but they either don't have it (but they can order it and it'll be here in a few weeks!) or it's overpriced crap or it's overpriced high-quality stuff. I don't need to pay $220 for a non-stick fry pan (Necessities), but I don't want to pay $40 for a brand I've never heard of either (Swains).

Local stores need to: Get more stuff in stock, price it reasonably compared to what it costs online plus a little extra for the convenience of getting it now instead of waiting for shipping, and stay open later in the evening and on both Saturday and Sunday. All these things will cost them but they're losing business without them.

Aside from a few trolls I find the comments and discussion here to be much more intelligent than the PDN. The only thing the PDN comments are good for is showing the rest of us how stupid most of the people in this city can be.

The problem with getting more stuff in stock is that you've then paid out for dead inventory to be sitting on your shelf on the off chance that someone's going to buy it. With such a limited buying market you could easily be throwing away a ton of money trying to keep things in stock on a "maybe".

On the other hand, there are definitely a lot of businesses that could be smarter about things. Popular items? Should be a no-brainer. Two weeks? That's crazy. I can get it online faster than that and for cheaper. I'll give local businesses some leeway on stocking items, but I shouldn't have to wait more than a week tops.

And the PDN comments are a joke and disappear often, names or no names.

I agree.

People have criticized comments made on the forum, in the past, saying they represent Port Angeles poorly to the "outside world", but I think the PDN comments are FAR more embarrassing, and on a FAR more consistent basis.

I wouldn't move to Port Angeles, based upon the comments I read at the PDN site.

Too bad the council makes its own vinegar. If they didn't, they could buy that local.

PS - Check out the wording of the super interesting poll today (Sat. night) on the PDN, it ends in the word "IS"!! DUR!

How to cover the far east, Jeffco. and other things that are not local - roll down the window, if the lighting is poor, and if someone is wearing a recognizable mass produced mask, take a picture. Drive home. Crop it, so that it's not framed correctly.

A "recognizable mass produced mask" like... what? The one the killer in "Halloween" wore?

Actually, what are you talking about? I'm genuinely curious now.
